Greetings from a Current Reedie...

The prevalence of drugs/nudity on campus is greatly exaggerated during prospie weekend and on Facebook. Yes, some people do drugs, and you will probably see a naked person at some point (probably during Renn Fayre). But these things are far from "daily occurence[s] that everyone gets involved" with. It's just that when a few people do them, those people are much more visible and/or verbose about it then the hordes of Reedies studying in the library or what have you.

For me (and, I think, for most Reedies), drugs and nudity are a relatively small part of campus life, especially when compared to academics -- those who put partying before academics tend to either rethink the issue or drop out.

The options to do drugs or play naked kickball (I've only seen it once...) certainly exist, but you can easily abstain from these activities without adversely affecting your social life or living in sub-free. (Not that I have anything against sub-free, it just pales in comparison to the awesomeness that is Mad Science).

Also consider how Reed could be one of the top six academic schools if drugs and partying were so prevalent.

Yes, I visited before I was accepted but it was at the beginning of summer vacation so I thought that I might have missed some key components. Or that the students were so super humanly smart they could do both drugs and school without being phased. Some sort of genetic experiment gone awry.

But thank you very much for answering that! I was really starting to worry about what I got myself into. I think it's just nerves getting to me.

Reedies, what do you think of the visual arts department (or what have you heard about it)? Is art prominent on campus or just relegated to its own little corner of congregated art nerds? I'm considering transferring as a Studio Art major.
