.Greg Mattison Is Michigan's Defensive Coordinator

Woo, I'm pretty happy.

Outstanding hire. This is arguably the best defensive mind in the game, thank god he has Michigan and Hoke connections. Just a little perspective, he held a Troy Smith led OSU team to 85 yards total offense at Florida in 06. He also can go up to a high school kid and say “hey I just d-coordinated Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Terrell Suggs, I think you better come play with me.” The D will see a drastic improvement over last year just with spring practice.

He definitely got a pretty penny

That’s great news, but not surprising. Hoke is very much a Defensive coach. That he should hire a top DC is to be expected.

Michigan has just 10 recruits committed so far, and a dozen of the top defensive high school players in the nation are still not committed. Given how weak our defense is, those guys would see immediate playing time and could be starters by the end of their true-freshmen years. Landing any of them is a long shot (most of them come from the South), but you never know. Here are some of the guys on my wish list:

Stephone Anthony (LB from North Carolina, 6’2", 220 LBS)
Jadeveon Clowney (DE from South Carolina, 6’6", 250 LBS)
Lamar Dawson (LB from Kentucky, 6’2", 230 LBS)
Ray Drew (DE from Georgia, 6’5", 250 LBS)
Enrique Florence (DB from Alabama, 6’1", 180 LBS)
Curtis Grant (LB from Virginia, 6’2", 220 LBS)
Christian Hayward (DT from San Diego, California, 6’2", 270 LBS)
Tim Jernigan (DT from Florida, 6’3", 280 LBS)
Malcolm Mitchell (DB from Georgia, 6’1", 190 LBS)
Delvon Simmons (DT from Pennsylvania, 6’5", 270 LBS)
Tony Steward (LB from Florida, 6’1", 230 LBS)

We also need a power RB (either Isaiah Crowell from Georgia and Marlin Lane from Florida would be good).

You meant to say that … he costs a pretty penny? 8^)

I thought demetrius hart was coming to michigan, but I guess not?!?!

Just wondering, what are some recruits that has already committed to michigan?

Hart decommitted and I believe went to Bama.

Hell, it’ll be interesting actually using our FBs now and not moving them to LB

'Bama just offered Hart another athletic scholarship, even though they usually offer up more than they actually have. There seem to be endless scholarships available in the SEC. Oh well, they’ll just take one away from an upperclassman who has been underperforming. Who cares if a kid is promised his 4-5 years of free education if he isn’t as good as the next best thing coming out of high school? I think it’s a traversty that the NCAA hasn’t clamped down on this nefarious practice!

SECheats is a dirty place

“'Bama just offered Hart another athletic scholarship”

Isn’t that an oxymoron?

oh, I thought the SEC handed out academic scholarships to its players. You know, write your name, do addition, upper level stuff in the SEC

Forcier is out

“I really wanted to stay. I was not giving up on Michigan, but in the end, it was made clear they had given up on me.”

Why? What happened? I know that Forcier is academic ineligible so he’s off the team. I thought he was going to community college for a year to work his grade up so he could reenroll at Michigan and rejoin the team on some sort of athletic scholarship. He would then have two years of eligibility left. Is that no longer an option?

By the way Hoke and Mattison are really saving this recruiting class. They have already scheduled around 10 four star guys for official visits. They also have been going hard after the top rated kicker and god knows that would be the most important recruit in the whole class.

eziamm, I hope they also visit a couple of five star recruits. There are roughly a handful of ffive star defensive players and a couple of five star offensive players that are undecided. On offense, I am not too worried about QB or OL, but we could certainly use a great WR and RB. On Defense, we are ok at DL but we really need LBs and DBs.

We need to recruit more DL if we are going to a 4 man front.

I looked at the list of the top high school players that are still undecided. Not a single one is considering Michigan. This shows how poorly Rich Rod did as a recruiter. You have a program like Michigan where any truly talented player, particularly on Defense but also at RB and WR, could come and play significantly as a true freshman and yet, not a single top 150 player is considering us.

I’m sure that had nothing to do with the fact half of the “Michigan nation,” along with higher ups in the university, were calling for RRods head since day one. And as soon as the season was nearing the end just about everyone was saying he should be fired. And then this process was dragged on for about a month. That must have made it real easy to recruit…

And he had a 5 or 4 star HB, but he decommitted was it was obvious RRod was out

D. Hart was the only top notch recruit. Other than him, we really had no major recrit on the hook, even when we were 5-0 and ranked.

D. Hart should have stuck with Michigan. Alabama has so much talent, even with Ingram gone, that he will be redshirted. Besides, Alabama has other highly talented RBs who may join this year, like Isaiah Crowell.

Finally, with Hoke’s offesive philosophy, Michigan will return to a run-based attack, which will require a consistant, 1,000+ yard rusher. A guy like Hart would have probably started immediately at Michigan.

Maybe Michigan can steal Crowell from Alabama! ;)

Give it time Alexandre. I say by next year Hoke will be signing top classes once again for Michigan. Everything is in place now, and the better athletes will follow.
