Humor me. Someone told me today (after we had said 'yes' to our son for Grinnell '14) that there is something like 73% women at Grinnell? I have nothing against women (I am one!) but I wanted to see my son (and later, my daughter) at a little more balanced male-female ratio school. I'm not radical about this, but I just don't think (although you may disagree) a college that is way skewed one way or the other is the best choice, for many reasons! Single sex (or near to it) colleges just don't resonate with me... Please advise. THANKS

Someone told you wrong- The website states it is 47% male, 53% women

Thanks for confirming that… I was pretty sure they were wrong. I glanced around a little on the website before posting the question, but didn’t find it. Thanks for finding it for me! My son is delighted to be headed to Grinnell next fall!

Interesting side-note. Dean of a Big 10 school told me that colleges have begun to favor applications from boys to keep the ratio close to 50-50

Mind saying which Big 10 school? Disappointed they didn’t seem to think that at one particular Big 10 school (of which I am an alum) in our family’s case… thought there were plenty of other reasons to accept, as well. I think geographic proximity plays in as well… sometimes they don’t want to many kids from one big city or school - and privates definitely like to get kids from farther afield rather than an hour or two away.

The dean’s statement was meant to convey what is going on in higher education, not necessarily their particular institution.

This has been true for several years. From a NY Times 2006 editorial by the Kenyon College Dean of Admissions entitled “To All the Girls I’ve Rejected”

"“The reality is that because young men are rarer, they’re more valued applicants. Today, two-thirds of colleges and universities report that they get more female than male applicants, and more than 56 percent of undergraduates nationwide are women.”

I strongly suspect that the reverse is true for colleges of engineering, science, math, and computer science (girls would be gold there).
