Rank them in terms of repuation and educational quality and selectivity.
Thanks guys!
And if you have visited the school, please tell me ur impression!

I'm not sure about selectivity, but as far as academic reputation:

1) Barnard, though since it's a women's college it's sort of in a different league.
2) Smith, but same deal.
3) Grinnell and Colgate - I'd say they're about equal in prestige, but Grinnell has the edge on academics. In the Northeast, Colgate is much more well known and respected, but in the Midwest and West, Grinnell is more well-known and carries some weight.
4) Hamilton. A nice school but doesn't have the same reputation as Colgate and Grinnell IMO.

not taking into account the 'name' factor because of the unfortunate nationwide unfamiliarity of LACS;based on quality and selectivity:

colgate
grinnell
hamilton
barnard
smith

Colgate
Barnard
Grinnell
Hamilton
Smith

reputation
(east coast) 1. smith 2. colgate 3. barnard 4. grinnell 5. hamilton
(west coast) 1. grinnell 2. smith 3 barnard 4. colgate 5. hamilton
(over all) 1. smith 2. barnard 3. grinnell 4. colgate 5. hamilton

quality of education
1. grinnell 2. smith 3. barnard(-columbia), colgate 5. hamilton

selectivity
1. colgate (lowest acceptance rate)
grinnell (highest test scores)
3. hamilton
4. barnard
5. smith

collegeprep, are you saying with seriousness that smith has a better "over all" reputation than colgate and grinnell? please tell me your post was intended to be humorous and not real. quality of education? east coast/ west coast? where are you getting this stuff? colgate is the best school on the list.

Pirt is right:

1.Colgate
2.Grinnell
3.Smith
4.Hamilton
5.Barnard

How about some actual data.

For Class of 2010, accepted (not enrolled) students:

Colgate: 28% acceptance rate; 1385 average SAT
Barnard: 24% acceptance rate; 1400 median SAT

Seems reasonably comparable to me.

(As noted, the SATs are for accepted students. The SATs for students who actually enroll -- the data that is reported in the Common Data Sets, as well as in USNews etc. -- will be lower.)

They are all close enough in those categories that you should be thinking more about ranking them in terms of fit and aptness for you; what you want to study; what sort of social scene you want;etc.

Of course a visit is the best way to answer those questions, but if you are international and can't visit, then you should at least be asking based upon your personality and the things you are looking for in an American collegiate experience and education.

Yeah, I would say smith has the best reputation at of all of them-- but I don't know why.

in the northeast, Barnard and Colgate have a much higher reputation than Smith and Grinnell

In CT, Smith has the lowest reputation on this list except for obviously Grinnell

selectivity: barnard, colgate, grinnell, hamilton, smith

barnard is really selective; i don't know why people are dropping it down. the academics are great at all of them and, i believe, known to be. hamilton and grinnell have less prestige, grinnell just in the northeast. its student body is known to be a bit odd :)

In terms of standardized test scores for first year students.

MIDDLE 50% RANGE OF VERBAL SAT

Grinnell 640 - 750
Barnard 650 - 740
Colgate 630 -710

MIDDLE 50% RANGE OF MATH SAT

Grinnell 640 - 730
Barnard 640 - 710
Colgate 650 - 720

MIDDLE 50% RANGE OF ACT

Grinnell 29 - 33
Barnard 27 - 30
Colgate 29 - 32

At least in terms of standardized test scores of first year attending students, Grinnell has a slight edge over both Barnard and Colgate. Grinnell also has one of the highest percentage of graduates who eventually earn Phd's. Grinnell's lower perceived prestige is due in large part to its location in the middle of rural Iowa. If Colgate was moved to Iowa and Grinnell was moved to New York, the perceptions of the schools would likely be very different.

average SAT score doesnt say anything about reputation or academic quality.

You are correct that average SAT scores in themselves does not say anything about reputation or academic quality of an academic institution. But there generally is a correlation. If you look at a list of the most prestigious colleges and universities with reputations for academic excellence, they are also the colleges with the highest average SAT scores ( Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore ).

Barnard, Colgate, Grinnell, Hamilton, and Smith are all excellent schools which ranked between 15 and 27 in the 2006 USNWR overall rating of US liberal arts colleges. Grinnell, Hamilton, and Colgate tied for 15th.

The poor perception of Grinnell is probably due in large part to its isolated location in a town of under 9,000 surrounded by Iowa cornfields rather than the quality of the school itself.
