@sanjosedad I’m glad it was a good visit for your daughter. I think that what I had hoped for was achieved. D18 traveled alone for the first time, had to catch two different connecting flight and learned how to check in online so that she scored the window seat every time! She had a safe experience, she was treated well, met new and interesting people and was able to visit a place unlike any she had experienced before. She said she came away knowing that Grinnell did their best in creating a campus filled with interesting and diverse people and the students talked about how committed Grinnell was to meeting their needs. One simple example being food-Vegetarian, Vegan, Kosher and Halal food was regularly available according to a first year student. Another told her that Grinnell very well understands the limitations of being in such a remote and small town, yet they are active about bringing the city to them and generously funding clubs to provided entertainment and activities. Hey, they flew my girl out and the only casualty was a forgotten toothbrush! All is well :-bd
@Middy, this was a first time experience for me also to visit a small LAC in a remote location when the school in session. The campus is very quiet. You see few students walking around going to classes or so. Only in the morning or lunch or dinner, you see hundreds of students in the cafeteria bldg come for their food and only then you realize that this is a college campus! Talked to few students, seems like they don’t talk much about partying or so. Some of them were saying even on weekends, you pretty much stay in your dorm, either do studying or spend time with your friends inside. So, education is the main focus of majority of the students. There are only 3 or 4 academic bldg. The new science bldg is the largest one and hosts most of the science, math, cs, stat classes. They are building a new modern Humanities bldg where they will have various studios for group study etc. for humanities classes. It will finish in 2019.
We just made it back. We also were at St Olaf for a music audition on Saturday. Very long snowy drive back today to Minneapolis then four hour flight home. My D had a very good time with her overnight. Really enjoyed the events and felt that she could easily find her people there. Made some good connections. The town is small but charming. All in all a good visit. Lots of decisions to make.
@Veryapparent What an effort that was for you two! Glad you made it safe to Minnesnowta. These types of decisions are good problems to have.
Definitely! To elaborate-Overall I was really impressed with Grinnell. We had a great tour guide who was an international student from Japan who had gone to high school in Canada. He did a great job of describing his experience at Grinnell. The student body is diverse which is a big plus for my D. On her visit to the school pre application she did not get that impression. Her host had a large group of friends that joined them for dinner and really reached out. My D came home with contact info for quite a few of the people she met. My D is pretty reserved so I was surprised by this. She chose a class to visit that was outside of her scope of interest but thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not sure where she will end up at this point but yes great to have a lot of choices and both my D and I are certain Grinnell would be a good choice,
On your financial aid checklist does it say received or approved?
Mine says received
@ARIVERA1 – Received
Thank you both, I checked my son’s portal and wondered if it was supposed to say approved.
Any updates on the decision date?
@ANJA123 – I’ve not seen anything about a decision date!
@ANJA123 I thought it might be tomorrow based on previous years
I would agree
hey hey hey @matt4isu
The admissions decisions will come out tomorrow.
@harrystyles5678 On what do you base that statement? And, if it’s true, what time?
I was sent an email saying I didn’t qualify for financial aid, but that they “hope I still come.” I emailed back asking if this was separate from an admissions decision, and the admissions officer said yes and the decisions will be out Friday evening.
if decisions do come out tomorrow, good luck from an early decision applicant! grinnell’s a wonderful, wonderful place. i hope to meet/see some of you on campus during one of the admitted students days programs!
@harrystyles5678 thanks for the information.
Lot of colleges be sending notifications this Fri! My daughter just received her acceptance letter from Williams College this evening. We loved Grinnell when we attended the admitted student day couple of weekends back. With more notifications coming soon, she will be hard pressed to make the final decision, God willing. Good luck to all class of 2022.
