I just read in an article in the Chicago Tribune about waitlists that Grinnell's waitlist had swelled from 541 last year to 1,189 this year! That's quite a jump. Given what we have been discussing here about acceptance rate, yield, etc, it will be interesting to see what they do with that kind of a list.

Well they’ve had quite a bit of variance in yield in the previous years, leading to 2012 and 2015 being 450 students while 2013 and 2014 are under 400 IIRC. Throw a 50% spike in applications on top of already unpredictable yield and it doesn’t surprise me at all that they’re using the waitlist more.

Last year Grinnell admitted 50% of approx. 3,000 applicants, this year 30% of approx. 4,500. So, about the same number admitted, 1,500 admits +/-. In theory, because of the larger applicant pool, they have more competitive applicants than in past years, more kids that may be getting into other top LACs, and they are not sure about what those kids will do. My guess is that they are very uncertain about yield. Thus the really high number of waitlisted kids.

Grinnell’s 1,189 wait-listed students must have been whittled down to a much lower number given that many choose not to remain on the list. Does anyone know what that lower number is?

The numbers I have for two last recent years are the following:

2010-11

Number of qualified applicants offered a placed on waiting list
769
Number accepting a place on the waiting list
356
Number of wait-listed students admitted
13

2009-10

1026
309
71

FYI Grinnell has gone to their wait list. BFF was advised that they were admitted today. :D

Excellent!

My good friend just got accepted off the waitlist :D

OFFERED ADMISSION TODAY!!! So excited. Only thing is, I must decide by next wednesday and my visit this weekend won’t consist of any tours or talks with faculty. Still, very happy with the Fin Aid package and stoked that my 1st choice LAC has offered me an in!

Now to decide… Willamette or Grinnell? Will definitely open a separate thread for that whole issue :P

^I’m sure you could still find someone to give you a tour, man. Go get on the facebook group and ask if anyone will still be on campus to show you around. I could even do it myself if you needed, but there are plenty of trained tour guides that should still be on campus Friday and Saturday.

Did you receive a letter, e-mail or a phone call? How did you learn about your acceptance from the wait list?

I was admitted today after a phone call and an email. I’m hoping to visit this weekend, but I’m still waiting for the financial aid package…

I’m off of Grinnell’s waitlist

I received an email yesterday if I was still interested in attending the institution, and I replied that I definitely am. The next morning I got an email stating my admittance to Grinnell! I was really excited, since I had been waitlisted everywhere without any acceptances from other colleges… I have to reply by the end of May though. So unless I receive acceptance notifications from other institutions, I guess I’m attending Grinnell.
