Grinnell announces 13th President - News | Grinnell College

My daughter got to see his presentation and was very impressed. Wish him well! Interesting times to be running such a place and a definite change from Washington DC…

Prior to serving at the NIH, Dr. Kington was at the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism). In 2002, he testified before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs on the subject of “Under the Influence: The Binge Drinking Epidemic on College Campuses”. Here is the full text of that testimony:

http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/NR/rdonlyres/612AA7D4-5CD1-4A05-8577-3DDFA2BD3BA6/0/051502kington.pdf

In brief, Dr. Kington mentioned that an NIAAA Task Force had published a report stating that college drinking accounted for 1400 deaths (and many more injuries, assaults, and sexual assaults) each year. He noted that many persons are of the opinion that “Drinking has always been part of the college tradition and always will be.” However, Dr. Kington stated: “We refuse to accept a single alcohol-related death, a single assault, a single case of date rape as inevitable.” He concluded his testimony by stating that even though “‘changing the culture’ does not come quickly or easily”, he was urging that “all college and university presidents … apply the recommendations of the Task Force Report”.

It will be fascinating to see how Dr. Kington addresses the issue of college drinking now that he is actually a college president.

Very interesting, capandgown. It would be great to see Grinnell take a leadership role in addressing campus binge drinking.

Thank you so much for posting these articles, PRJ and capandgown. Maybe there is hope, after all, for beginning a change in the campus drinking culture which is a problem at so many schools.

Dr. Kington sounds like a wonderful new president for Grinnell. It is one of my S’s top 3 schools, and he may very well attend there if accepted. I look forward to following news on Dr. Kington and changes he may make at Grinnell.

BengalMom, I hope Grinnell and your S choose each other :)

As an alum, I hope that Dr. Kington will help Grinnell achieve the greater national recognition it so richly deserves.

Wow–this guy sounds GREAT!!
