Groceries during College

Hey for all of you who have visited or have friends/family going to penn, is there a grocery store nearby penn such as a walmart or something. I hear theres a nature’s grocer store but it might not have everything… for essentials such as bottled water and snacks and such… I ate at the cafeteria and it wasn’t that great… Thanks

it's called the fresh grocer and it has anything you'll possibly want... there's also wawa (the convenience store you'll learn to love), as well as cvs, which has a lot of food items too.

there's also houston market and c3, the commons convenience store, which accept meal plan options.

Was the cafeteria terrible, or just not great? What did you eat?

It wasn't that good... I liked the food carts better, but I'm not sure if thats part of the meal plan

What kind of food did you eat and what is a food cart?

Haha everyone WISHES the food carts were on the meal plan... the food on the whole in the dining halls is not bad, its just after a while you learn that they really do not have too much variety so its a lot of the same stuff... The food carts are amazing though. They are these little trucks around University City that put out great food in short amounts of time for very cheap. THere are chinese food carts, etc...

I Love Food Carts =)

Food carts are the best.

Anyway there is a fresh grocer on 40th st, and worthy of note is that it is open 24/7.

We also have 2 Wawas and a 7-eleven open 24/7, all of which have drinks, snacks, etc.

And the CVS recently relocated to 34th & Walnut where it is much more convenient for those of you who will be stuck in Hill (hey, just be glad it's not Kings Court...)

Compared to my poor little bro at princeton, i am awash in options for food and drink. penn rulez

azndude -

If you are expecting a walmart in W. Philly then you don't understand how an older Eastern city is set up - there would never be enough room for a huge Walmart Supercenter with giant parking lots right in the middle of W. Philly. There are regular Walmarts (the kind without fresh food) elsewhere in the city but you'd need a car to get to them or take a lot of buses.

In addition to the Fresh Grocer that everyone mentions (which while there's a great selection will look tiny by supercenter standards), there's another supermarket called Supreme at 43rd and Walnut that has more ethnic stuff - Latin and some Asian. Plus there are Indian grocery stores , a Halal market, etc. around it. If you are "ethnic" and have a craving for some exotic thing this is the area to go to. The area gets slightly "ghetto" and you might not want to go there at 4 AM but in daylight hours its fine. But the vibe is "ethnic" and not "upscale" like the Fresh Grocer.

There's also a Trader Joe's at 22nd and Market - though most of the stuff they have can be found cheaper at Fresh Grocer.

food carts were great compared to the dining halls

cheap and delicious...i also love those fruit carts! great way to get fruits
