What grocery stores do current students go to, and how accessible are they by walking/biking from campus?

There are a couple Safeways within easy driving distance from campus. I believe one of them is at the end of a Marguerite (bus) route as well, and if you were really feeling motivated you could probably bike there in 10 or 15 minutes. If you're willing to sacrifice some selection, Tressider Express (a glorified convenience store) is located on campus - it will sell basic personal hygiene items and snack foods and that's about it.

There's also a Whole Foods and a similar type place called Andronico's Marrket nearby, probably closer than either of the Safeway's now that I think about it, but those are more for specialty foods and they are a bit more expensive than your basic run of the mill grocery store.

For basic supplies and dorm snacks (soap, deodorant, batteries, potato chips, caffeine in all its forms) "TresEx" works fine, albeit with somewhat low selection. "Secret Safeway" (actually not so secret, just a bit tucked away) is probably within biking distance, though I've never tried it. And the Marguerite goes to the other Safeway.

Is there a particular grocery store you're hoping to find close to campus? Some sort of food you want to get? Just want to know how close the stores are?

I wish there were ranch 99 or lion or similar asian market in palo alto. I usually go for safeway on el camino real. It could take 10-20 mins by biking and 35-40 mins by walking depending on where you live

If you're looking for asian snack foods, etc. I know my Christian fellowship goes on trips to places you can buy some in the fall of each year. You don't have to be in the fellowship or Christian or asian to go. Anyone is welcome. If you wanted to know of places to go, and/or if you want a ride if/when people go, I'd be happy to ask around.

I thank everybody for the information. I'm just looking for a place to get fresh groceries without a car, so the Safeway sounds good.

This is way out of date of your question: but JJ&F market is right on the south edge of campus, easy biking or a healthy walk away. College Avenue just off El Camino past Escondido Village housing. A lot of us Palo Altans shop there because it has some of the best local produce around and is a general grocery store and deli that has most of what you might need. Great sandwiches from the deli. A family-owned store.

Mollie Stone's is a market at the end of California Avenue near the train station. I think those are the two closest grocery stores. Neither are as cheap as Safeway but they are more convenient.
