Groton 2nd Form (8th Grade) Waiting List

I have found out the hard way just how out of my league in the world of boarding schools. My child was waitlisted for the 8th grade at Groton School. I didn't even know that was possible because the class size is so small. There was another student from my child's school that also applied who did get in. Same gender. I think that this scenario is even worse than a rejection. Does anyone know of any child who was taken off the waiting list for the 8th grade at Groton? Thank you for any help.

I can’t answer your question but want to say don’t think of it as worse than a rejection! Although the ultimate outcome may be not having a place in that class this year, the message to your child is: you are the kind of student we want at our school, and if we had room for you, we would invite you to join our student body. As I have read in many posts here and also in waitlist letters from admissions offices (!) there are many variables that affect who is admitted in any given year to create a class that is balanced in terms of gender, academic strengths, athletics, arts, other EC’s, all kinds of diversity mandates, and of course the full pay vs financial pay issue. I’m sure you will find someone to address your specific question about 8th grade WL at Groton, but your post sounded so sad that I wanted to remind you that the WL scenario is far from a rejection, it just represents the reality of too many qualified students for far too few spots. And, lucky you, starting so young, your child should be able to reapply successfully next year if it comes to that!!!

I was waitlisted at groton last year for grade 8 but I was never accepted. I reapplied again and got rejected. school estimate their yield rate so they accept more students then they actually need. the chance is slim but there still is one especially if you are a sports recruit

Bump…anyone out there with more thoughts on this situation?

As the parent of a current Groton IInd former I can say that its a tough nut to crack- the class is VERY small and they have a deep pool. However I know of several III formers who reapplied after being turned down in II form.
We had low expectations of being admitted, and were fully prepared to reapply in III form, and cast our net wider.
If there is movement on the wait list it will happen in June when the first payment is due, and the reality of the fees hits.
Kids DO get off the Waitlist so don’t despair, and if the worse happens, then apply again next year. Either way- your child WILL find their perfect match :0)

I’m reviving this thread. I’ve heard of one female day student who got off the waitlist in IInd Form.
Does anyone know Groton’s yield for IInd Form? I hear the over enrolled in it a couple years ago, so hopefully they admitted fewer students this year!

(This is like waiting for March 10 all over again, except worse, because there’s no definite deadline!)
