Groton 8th Grade Admissions

I have read conflicting information concerning the admissions rate at Groton for 8th grade. Any information or antidotes is greatly appreciated. I have seen prior posts but they are from several years ago so I am trying to gather more current information. Thanks!

Nothing wrong with calling the school and asking.

I don’t know the numbers, but my recollection is that it is the easiest grade to get into out of 8,9,10, and 11.

ASAIK, Groton (or any other BS) does not publish acceptance rates by grade. The overall acceptance rate is 12%.

I have seen/heard conflicting information some say easiest some say hardest b/c of smaller class size. My child is planning on applying and is obsessing over it. I say just apply and see what happens, but being a Type A like me “child” is driving him/herself crazy as well as the rest of us worrying about it.

There are fewer spots for 8th but much fewer applicants for those spots as opposed to 9th.

I believe the admit rate is somewhat higher’ but not much.

A lot depends on how many faculty kids are applying that year. They’re not guaranteed admission, but they can be a big percent of the 8th grade.

Same with siblings. Because the class is so small, siblings & faculty kids have an outsized impact.

While there are many siblings in the 8th grade class there are los of examples of siblings who are not accepted. My second DS is an example of this. The sibling “thing” is a foot in the door, but in many cases it doesn’t open it! It is so difficult to get into these schools, even with numerous “hooks” it wasn’t enough and I’ve heard of so many similar situations.

We were told by the AO DS interviewed with (for 9th) that it was easier to get into Groton as an 8th grader. FWIW

We were told by the AO that it’s harder for girls @ 8th grade based on number of available places— something like 14 boys, 11 girls – then other considerations of commitment

I would add that they assume almost 100% yield for 2nd form since those applicants really aren’t going to go anywhere else. So they are really only giving out 14 admits per gender. I’m not sure that lots of faculty
Kids are the norm but it is true that in a class
Of 28 a few more or less of any group makes a difference.
