Groton vs. Lawrenceville

So I got into a few different schools, and I have narrowed it down to Groton and Lawrenceville. I just want to find out what the two schools are really like so PLEASE help me in my decision by giving your opinion.

Any information on these schools would be great

Do you want to go to a school where everyone knows you or a school where they don't maybe you don't care.
Do you want to go to a school where you can play sport to the varsity level no problem or do you want to go to a school with tons of PG's where each varsity sport has 5+ players going to D1 sports in college.
Do you want to go to a large prep school or a small school .
Do you want to go to a school near NYC or Boston.
Both schools have excellent college matriculation, rigorous academics and great art programs.
If you are in the top 5% academically of either school you can probably go to any college you want.

Answer these questions one at a time and I'll tell you where you should go.

lawrenceville has an amazing house system, a great campus and facilities, near NYC and Philadelphia. They have great courses, and though they are a bit under rated I would classify them in the same class as deerfield exeter andover and hotchkiss.

thanks, anyone else please post your opinion

My son is a freshman at L'ville and though we have never visited Groton, we do know many kids who are there. Sarum has the differences right. L'ville is very diverse, 50% white, 20% international, and one-third day students. He is very happy, has a single room, he plays three sports and has managed to be on a team. He has made many friends, and is looking forward to more kids joining in 10th grade. He has friends across grades, and the classes are interesting. I would think Groton would have great academics. Can you go on revisit days to both schools? You would probably get a feel right away - I know my son did.

thanks so much, i have heard from a lot of people that the revisit days are really helpful

I say lawrenceville
But go to revisit days
Maybe you'll be able to decide
Good Luck!

for sure lawrenceville, being in the princeton downtown, walking distance away from princ. univ, academics r great and beautiful campus

So I prefer all the aspects of Groton except for the distance from my home, about a 1.5 hr flight, which is further than Lawrencevilles distance from home and I have heard that Groton has a lot of work. Its the work thing true, and is going to a school further away from home any different than going to a school that is still a 3 hour drive from home.

baseball2 -- L'ville is about eight miles from Princeton...

i know groton's academics and college placement are a little better but l'ville's are still great. i got into both and am leaning towards groton. at either school you'll do fine.

Ya, I think I am leaning toward Groton too, but I am unsure if Groton's workload is too much for me.

i am curious as to how you can know a school has better academics than another. differences in school quality tend to be largely exaggerated.

The characteristics of the school are very different. You should definitely go to both revisits, because it is hard to understand those differences unless you are there in person. Lawrenceviille is a lot more permissive in many areas. You will be more able to take a taxi or train to NYC from Lawrencville or go to people's homes for parties on weekends. That is a lot less likely to happen at Groton for 2 reasons: 1. the size of the school makes it easier to keep closer tabs on students at Groton (there are all kinds of sign-ins-attendence is checked every evening and is monitored at chapel in the mornings, etc.; 2. that reflects the character of the schools. Maybe it is because kids around NYC grow up faster and their parents are more comfortable with greater independence, or maybe Boston just has different values-I don't know. I do know that Groton prides itself on a more hands-on supervisory role than some schools and most people who send their children there want that. (We did.) You are right to be concerned about the academics and hard work. Many other schools also have great academics, but I find the character of the kids who go to Groton to be a little more bookish or perhaps nerdish than at some of the other schools, so it seems more widespread. Everyone works hard, but they also have fun.

Ya, I was wondering about the non-academic life at Groton. How are the other students etc.

Ya, I just wanted to know more about non-academic life at Groton, what are the other kids like etc.

Just in case you want to know, I decided to go to Groton

Congratulations on the decision!

That’s great! What form will you be going into?
