Can anyone give me insight on Groton School. I am considering applying there and would like ot know what other people's view points are. I have heard very mixed things about Groton.

I have heard it's a great school but not a whole lot of fun. Middlesex can offer academics on par with Groton and the kid's have fun.

If you go to Groton you get to wear a straw boater at graduation -- worth it right there.

My daughter graduated from Groton (in the last couple of years), and she loved it and has great loyalty to the school. They work awfully hard, but she wanted that, and loved the intense striving. Her teachers were excellent and the school has a close, intimate feel to it. They have dances nearly every weekend, and go into Boston on the weekends, and seem to be able to squeeze some fun into their lives.
There is an atmosphere of fierce integrity that I suspect is unequalled by any school. They take their Honor Code very seriously. There is a laser-like look to the eyes of Groton students that is recognizable.
As a parent, I felt Groton didn't communicate well with parents. I also thought the workload was excessive, and the teachers graded too harshly. My Groton daughter disagrees with me on both points.

Wht is a Straw boater?

Kill me now...

???????
huh?

Sorry, I'm becoming a cranky old man.

A straw boater is a hat -- made of straw and kind of hard to describe.
Wide brim and a flat top, which often features a muti-colored ribbon
(of school or club colors) above the brim. Veeery preppy. Have you seen
"Singing In The Rain"? Gene Kelly wears one in the movie. Still worn at Henley Regatta quite often. Groton's boys still wear one at graduation. Actually pretty cool.

If you ask me "who is Gene Kelly?", we're gonna have a problem...

Sooooooooooo Funster.......errrrrr............Who is Gene Kelly?
lol

Dick van Dyke wore a boater in a scene with Julie Andrews in "Mary Poppins."

I'd also be interested in knowing more about Groton. It seems that people have very strong opinions about it one way or the other. It is often cited as being "a very good school" yet it doesn't seem to get the same kind of glowing reviews as other schools. I have noticed, however, that the students who actually go there seem to really love it. I am wondering what kind of kids it tends to attract.

the main issue i hear about groton is that the school is school size. that is a personal choice. it is a great school for some people.

groton:
small (personaly, i like that), beautiful campus, rich kids
i was waitlisted. very good school, not as well known as say, exter, sps, or andover. u may want to pm the people who got accepted/waitlisted from the master list.
(dick van dyke was in mary poppins? one and the same? who knew.)

ummm soooooooo... Would you mind telling me who Gene Kelly is?

Gene Kelly:
Actress, on Brodway, and film, did Singing in the Rain, Oscar winner, similar to Fred Astaire, dancer, 1912-1996, 5'6''
(I googled her :) )

Gene Kelly was a man.

Groton is a great school, one of the best no doubt. My mom went there, loved it. I was accepted. It definitely appeals to a special type of person however.

artsmart- lol-you're kidding, right. If not then your moniker betrays you.

What type of person, do you think?

hey, i mixed up the gender. what can u expect from an internet search.
adiosamigo- i resent that!
