My daughter is flying to LAX Saturday, noonish, and her UG roommate told her last night she can't pick her up and take her to her destination, CHOC in the city of Orange. Any suggestions for a safe mode to get her there? Yes, price is a factor but safety is more important. TIA

Public transportation is not an option, so you pretty much need to get one of the airport shuttles or a taxi.

It is possible to take the FlyAway Bus to Union Station then the Metrolink to Orange, the Fullurton line stops in Orange. Now, timing wise, I don’t know if that would work since the weekend schedule is limited.

Here is the MetroLink schedule: http://www.metrolinktrains.com/schedules/stationtostation/?from=131&to=112&weekday=0&submit.x=56&submit.y=12

What is CHOC? (Pardon my ignorance here.)

DS will go to LAX the end of the year. A ticket has been booked. But have not finalized where he is going to stay yet - likely some hotel close to LAX. We are still learning about LA at this point. (It is very scary to drive on LA’s freeway, IMHO. Many drivers drive too fast on some freeway which has many sharp turns/curves.)

If your D stays at a well-known hotel which is not too far from LAX, they usually provide a free shuttle service. It seems Orange county is too far away though. Can she change her destination so that the destination airport is closer to the Orange county? When DS flied from BDL to Dallas (DFW), the flight occasionally would continue to Santa Ana (SNA). Not sure if it is closer to Orange County though.

If she is schlepping lots of stuff, the public transit options probably aren’t the greatest since there will be multiple transfers with walks in between.

There are many shuttle companies that serve LAX. She could probably find an express type service to get her to John Wayne Airport or somewhere in the Disneyland area. From there a cab ride to her final destination wouldn’t be terribly costly.

Super Shuttle would be about $50 but could have multiple stops. She should reserve a spot ahead of time.

My guess is a taxi would be about $100.

The public transport option described above would be long and potentially confusing.

I’m assuming you’ve explored the possibility of changing her ticket to fly into SNA and thats a no go.

Assuming that CHOC is Children’s Hospital of Orange County…

Apparently, it is an option, according to Google Maps. But it will take about 3-4 hours that way, versus 41-44 minutes driving without traffic (although traffic jams in the area can make the driving time much longer).

Have you used Lyft?

<a href=“Drive with Lyft – Cities”>https://www.lyft.com/cities/orange-county

There should be a Disneyland Shuttle.

SuperShuttle worked great to get to OC for me – there are coupons on-line which can help with the price.

Thanks all for the suggestions. She booked on SuperShuttle to the Disneyland hotel, only $17 then a 5 mile cab ride to CHOC.

Went to Orange County destinations via LAX last year and had a rental car, plus many other trips (usually Orange County airport). I don’t find the freeways scary at all. Civilized drivers, unlike some other places. Perhaps having driven Chicagoland ones numerous times including needing to cross several lanes quickly to be on the correct one influences my opinion. My OC in laws were shocked many years ago when they visited us and I crossed the solid line on the entrance ramp- apparently that was just not done there.

btw- if this is a business trip she should contact the place for suggestions as well although you/she now has a logical solution. It is likely the hospital knows of good ways to get from LAX to their place.

California drivers drive fast, but they know the rules of the road. Certain things take getting used to, like motorcycles lane splitting. But they are predictable and much better than the maniacs on the DC freeways.

I’m used to speed limits being the number one uses as a lowest speed- only geriatric drivers go that slowly! But, until moving to Florida (talked to someone from the Miami area, it isn’t just Tampa) I used to think the turn signal knob was included on all cars, not just mine and a few others. It is interesting how different areas interpret rules/laws differently.

Yeah, LA drivers are fine, if there isn’t water falling from the sky. The tricky thing is knowing where and when to go.

LA has the problem of so many cars leaving oily traces but so little rain that when it does rain things become oil slick slippery and people can forget that, as well as being unused to the effects of rain from above.

I recommend you try Shuttle2Lax, www.Shuttletolax.com. It cost $20 for one person from LAX to Orange County. I have used them a couple times in recent past and it worked out fine. You really can’t beat the price.

What about Uber?

You really cannot beat Shuttle2Lax. They use regular reputable shuttle companies like Prime Time and Supper Shuttle. $20 for the first person and $14 for additional. You can book directly on-line at their web site. I am using them again in October when I come back from overseas.

Thanks for all the replies. She got off her flight at LAX, was on SuperShuttle within 30 minutes…got to Disneyland Hotel in 35, hopped out and got straight into a cab for her 5 mile ride to her location. She was thrilled with the ease of it all. Thanks, CC.
