Growing Taller

Any tips, tricks, diets, sleeping methods, quirky things, etc. you want to share?
I want to see how CCers think about all the height debates (like whether working out stunts growth).

I'm a measly 56 and I want to reach 510 at the least. I used to box under a coach and the heavy workouts/training led my mom to believe that I stunted my growth. Although my genetics aren't too good, with my mom being 54 and my father being 55.

Feel free to express.

Wow, I could’ve written this. Except, I haven’t really worked out to that extent and I’m only 5’5"…

I’m interested in the responses.

I think your height is relevant to genetics. Unless you have tall grandparents or aunts and uncles, I think your height will correspond with your parents’ heights. I’m not trying to discourage you, but it’s unlikely that you will grow four inches if no one else in your family is around that height.

Other than that, all I can say is eat healthy and exercise:)

I did weights when I was 12 - 13 too. I’m 5’8, but according to a doctor I’m supposed to be at least 6’0.

Hahaha, yeah, I’m short too. 5’5. Trust me, there is little you can do. If you look online, you’ll find all this junk about exercise routines and pills. None of 'em work. If you really wanna grow taller, I think all you can do is eat healthy, get a good amount of exercise and sleep, and hope for the best. But being short isn’t too bad. I’m short, and it’s working out okay. I used to be really obsessed about height, and it wasn’t a very healthy attitude.

About the working out thing, from what I know, muscle training and such helps growth, if anything. As long as you’re not going completely overboard and squatting with like 500 lb, I think it should be okay haha

Height mainly has to do with genetics, though a poor diet can stunt your growth.

How old are you Protagonizer? When I was younger, I was always on the shorter side. When I got to 10th grade, I shot up like 4" and that next year, I grew 2 more inches. I went from 5’6 to almost 6". It could be that my dad is tall but I was also a late bloomer. Maybe you are too.

Of course height is determined by a mix of genetics and diet (though diet isn’t an issue for most, if not all, people on CC), but we’re not as simple as pea plants. Plenty of people are much shorter or much taller than their parents. The inheritance of human traits like height is more complex than “Your parents are tall, therefore you are tall;” it’s not something you’ll figure out by doing a 2 by 2 Punnet square.

Anywho, I am short, and it was one of my lifetime goals to be short, so I can’t really help out people who want to be tall.

here’s what i think; you do grow in high school. i think it is a disadvantage to be asian though, because a lot of it IS genetics. boohoo for me

i’m like 5"2? now? I was 5"1 a year ago and the doctors said that I had stopped growing after the age of 13 (I’m turning 15 in a month) curiously enough, this was exactly when I started growing again (from when I was 11 1/2 - 14 I didn’t grow at all. Maybe half an inch) but I’m still growing. So I think the doctors are bs, I think pills aren’t as bs if you go to a trustworthy place, and shots aren’t all that bs if you go to a REALLY trustworthy place. albeit, out of the 100,000 clinics out there, only a hundred of them have any decent stuff. i honestly wouldn’t risk it unless you’re below the 5"0 area.

but you know what. I don’t mind being short. I’m comfortable with the rate I’m growing because the way I see it, I’ll be a full 5"3 once I finish high school and dang it i’ll like it (:

honestly if you’re a guy, the only major concern is to get beyond 5"7. once you’ve hit there, you’re up for dates (yea, sure, 5"7 is on the shorter side, but apparently biologically shorter guys are better for long term relationships XD)
and if you’re a girl, just don’t be eva longoria (what does she claim to be? she looks really tiny)

My parents are 5 feet 2, 5 feet 6 (mom, dad), but I’m 5 feet 10.

Genetics are fairly important, but so is nutrition. My parents didn’t get much when they grew up in China, but I’ve been eating steroid laced chicken and milk all my life so…yeah.

I haven’t grown since freshman year and I’m 5’. I also think there isn’t much you can do; it has more to do with genetics than anything. Both my parents are short, their parents are short.

But if you have a good diet, then maybe something will happen. My sister seems to be getting taller than the rest of us. She drinks a lot of milk.

I drank a lot of milk when I was younger and that’s probably why I’m 6 feet right now. My parents are 5’2’’ and 5’5’’ so genetics isn’t everything.

Nothing can really make you taller, it’s more a question of what can stunt your growth. And while genetics may not be everything, but they are ALMOST everything.

The only thing I’ve ever heard of to make someone taller are those “elongating” surgeries.

I’m going to be a junior in a few days.

Hahah, the family and genetics thing seems true, actually. As of now, I’m among the tallest of my extended family members.

So, there aren’t any specific exercises or etc. that aid growth? (My dad always insists that playing basketball or just hanging from bars makes you taller LOL)

Never heard of any exercises like that. I guess you just have to be careful about what you eat. I heard that coffee and soda can stunt growth.

[Human height - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Human height - Wikipedia)

It’s actually kinda interesting.

Lol in response to playing basketball making you taller. Coffee will stunt your growth, not sure about soda. There’s some theory that frequently rubbing your big toe will trigger your pituitary gland to make you grow more, but I think it’s pretty much bogus. I’m also around 5’6" and while it can get annoying, it’s really not that bad. Are you still growing, and does the doctor think you’ll make 5’10"?

I’m 5’5.5", and proud of that half inch! Asian as well, although I have bad asthma and a weak immune system when I was younger, so I have taken a lot of steroid medications, like prednisone, and apparently that stuff stunts your growth. I was predicted at one point to hit 5’8".

all of my immediate family is around average height (parents, grandparents). i’m 14, female, and around 5’2", I’m hoping to make it to 5’4", but if i could be 5’6" even like my mom all my pants would fit perfectly (the average woman’s pant is made for a 5’6" woman). my dad is 6’0". yeah. if only certain parts of my circumference would grow!

I don’t think there are any effective exercises that would enable you to grow four inches:/ Being 5’6 isn’t too bad though:) (I’m only 5’3’’ haha, and I hope that I grow a few more inches as well) However, you just need to learn to accept yourself for who you are. Who knows though, maybe you will grow another inch or two within the next few years:>
