IMHO internet addiction = slot machine addiction.

It’s a good tool but I think many people (including myself) are too easily distracted by it.
I say this because I spend way too much time on here, tumblr, even uselessly on facebook. CC is a good tool but it’s mostly a time sink. Tumblr and facebook are time sinks. When I had a phone (sort of gave it up), most of my time was spent surfing instead of reading, which is what I did prior to having an iPhone and laptop.

Ironically, I just started a blog on tumblr to sort of chronicle my journey in giving up technology
. This isn’t the best start, but I have an excuse as I was sending something to someone and ended up talking to the person.

Facebook = scourge on humanity

Video games = plague on society

(With some fairly minor qualifications) I humbly submit

…ok maybe not the humble part …

I don’t agree with the idea of technology being a scourge.

Video games and the internet are at the very least interactive forms of entertainment that keeps the mind active. Meanwhile, the old electronic entertainment forms of TV and radio basically involves sitting and watching/listening to whatever the channel decides to broadcast.

Educational value can be found in video games. There was this game called Europa Universalis III (think Risk on steroids) that I was into in HS that was perhaps the #1 reason for me getting a 5 on the AP world exam. I learned so much history and geography playing that, plus I got a basic idea of computer programming from modding it.

Meanwhile, the ability to use computers proficiently is becoming a common prerequisite for being successful in many career fields.
