GS Spring 2013 Applicants

I was a sociology major and it can get pretty analytical. Math, stats specifically, helps quite a bit and certain required courses - methods for social research, for one - can be very math heavy. Though, honestly, the math emphasis sounds like it varies from prof to prof. But, remember, a lot of our best sociologists are empiricists and love(d) crunching numbers! Talk to your departmental advisor about graceful ways to avoid this if it doesn’t sound good.

You’ll have a quantitative reasoning requirement to fulfill to get your degree. Though, plenty of non-math classes, like a logic lecture given by the philosophy department, will count.

had my interview 3 weeks ago and just got the call tonight and will be receiving my package soon! very excited!! congrats to everyone on their hard work and see you on campus!

Congratulations!

I also got in! FedEx surprised me with a package:)

Are in order! That’s wonderful news Ditau25 and Hen123 :-)

For those who are not deferring, anyone attending one of the December GS planning days? I wonder if we are allowed to bring our spouses?

I hope to be there next Thursday.

Also, make sure you apply for the New Student Scholarship ASAP if you haven’t already!

I wonder if GS students can join.

I believe CU shares the Space with the Princeton Club and the Williams Club.

Antika - Why wouldn’t we be able to? We’re not the bastardized, red-headed, step-children of CU, despite what some say. GS has the highest accumulative GPA of the three schools at CU. We have the same campus, faculty, degree, everything. The only differences, as one who applied and was accepted should know, are that we have a different administration and different admissions requirements because we’re for non-traditional students. As your title says, it’s Columbia University Club, not Columbia College, indicative that any of the subordinate schools are welcome.

Additionally, you just got accepted to an Ivy League school. You should be aware of the hard work involved. As such, why not try a little research? I typed in ‘Columbia University Club’ in google and it was the first link. Underneath that, was the ‘Eligiblity’ link.

ELIGIBILITY
All Columbia University Alumni, including degree-holders from Barnard College and Teachers College, are eligible for membership, as well as current Columbia faculty and administrators, certificate holders, and full-time graduate and undergraduate students.

Thanks Sean for the information.

You are right. I did read up on the CU Club information, but just wasn’t 100% sure.

It still doesn’t feel real to me.

Cheers!

I was just wondering if anyone here was still waiting for a response?

I’m a Columbia Club member. Definitely one of my favorite perks.

Stop worrying about the differences between GS and the other schools. Any limits while at Columbia can only be self-imposed. Students, professors, and administrators alike are conspiring to make you successful!

I submitted part two of my application on November 5th. I still have not heard either way.

I am very frustrated.

I have a JD from Georgetown, spent 5 years as a JAG attorney and I am a disabled veteran.

I do not know if I will get in but congratulations to everyone who did.

I was driving when I got a call from a blocked number; I answered and nearly drove off the road. I was just admitted to Columbia GS - I received the call around 5pm et. I really believed I did not get in, I was already making plans to go to another college. Hope this help some people who are still waiting:)

If you see a person with tattoos on his right forearm, that’s me:D I will be attending in spring.

Was just accepted for the Spring semester. I’m currently at Emory University at the College of Arts and Sciences and am wondering if it is worth it to transfer to the School of General Studies. When I think about the potential for job opportunities in NY (born and raised in NY) I lean towards Columbia’s School of GS, but when I compare the school of GS to Emory on paper, Emory’s College of A&S is clearly the better and more reputable school.

So I guess I’m wondering what the generalperception of the School of General Studies is (I haven’t heard much about it myself even though I live in the area, so I’m a little worried), and if people in general will look down on a degree from Columbia if it’s from G.S.

What would you do in my situation?

To anyone who is still waiting - they are still sending out acceptance letters.

Hope this gives you peace of mind.

Cornflower - Congrats. Still frustrated? What do you plan to do now since you’re obviously not using your JD?

Giwook - If I were in your situation, I would find a crowbar and pry my head out of my ass.

Yes, the Princeton Club lets us share the space, along with the Williams Club. Apparently, it’s also the home of the NYU Club. It’s a fine place, though they’re becoming more slack on the dress code, which is an altogether depressing development.

I just got my acceptance packet today, was really worried as I was getting emails saying things that I submitted were missing. Was asked to send a student copy of my transcript until they could get an official one and two days later I got the fedex package.

I just got my letter of rejection today… definitely reminds me the feeling I had six years ago as a high school senior and I did not get into my school of choice… I hope the best to everyone who applied and got in.

Sorry to hear the news danny. Calling GS and getting some feedback on how you can improve your application is always an option. Any possibility of trying again in the future?

Well I took your advice and set up an appointment and hopefully the feedback will give me some good insight. I will try again probably a year later because how much change can a person go through in one semester… The only way I wont reapply is if the admissions officer tells me that there is no hope even in the future…
