GS Update

I got in!!!

Geez, it's about time.

I would like to celebrate with Caladan and the others who got in. First round of drinks are on me. Hehe.

Anyone else hear anything?

Congratulations John. I haven't heard from them yet. Not certainly if they'll accept me or not. Did you get a phone call from them regarding admissions?

No phone call. The Fedex guy (not Kevin Federline) showed up on my porch this morning. He even gave me a "congrats" himself.

Maybe yours is in the mail. I live in Boston so I can't imagine that it would take long to be Fedexed from NYC to here.

My fingers are crossed for you buddy.

Thanks John. What is your intended major, now that the hardest part of GS(getting in) is now over?

Hey John9215... congratulations!

I just received a call from the associate director of admissions... I got in! I'm excited as hell... redlinekid, you hang in there.

So... I'll be receiving my FedEx package by Friday (according to MR), but I'm satisfied, for now, with the verbal confirmation.

I agree with you about starting that pre-GS community. I've never even visited NYC much less know anyone who lives there. =-(

wow... well, not necessarily wow... the first thing you'll learn in NY is that a true NY'er believes the world revolves around NY....

aside from myself, there'll be a lot of people willing to show you around... far from its reputation, as was supported by a recent study (informal) conducted by Reader's Digest, NY'ers are some of the most polite and friendly people in the world.

and also, it's not that tough to get around after about a week...

Thanx dude. I'll take you up on that offer.

Congrats on your acceptances! To be cliche, "Good things come to those who wait."

I'm really looking forward to spending my nights at Butler. I'm actually turned on by the whole idea.

john, be diligent with the housing situation. It's not guaranteed for GS'ers and you probably want to stay way from the nyc rental market since it's a heck of a lot more expensive.

This will probably be my last post. See you guys during orientation, I'll be by the CC tent.

Hi eveyone,
I finally got my notice from Columbia GS: I was rejected. Good luck to everyone who has gotten in.

I am going to call the admissions office on Monday to find out the REAL reason why my application was denied. From there, I'll focus my attention on UPENN's General Studies Program.

I would be so happy the day I get accepted to the schools of my choice.

Hello Everyone,

I have been a silent reader of this thread and finally decided to pull the trigger. I have an interview scheduled with the Dean of Admission at GS.

Since not every admitted student is interviewed, I was wondering if there are students who get rejections after the interview. Any other advice regarding the interview will be appreciated.

December 15 was the last day for the admission committee and they will start working from February 1, 2007 for the summer and fall session. Don’t ask me what exactly they are going to do in between Good luck to everyone who got in or did not get in. GS is not the end of the world, but it sure is an amazing place to study and start a career.

Hi Viper79,
If you got a phone call for an interview, then it's a very good sign that you'll get in. From what I've gathered, the people who are getting into Columbia GS are much stronger in terms of academic and career acheivements. As long as you have an interesting story to talk about, I have no doubt that you'll get in. However, admissions rate to GS can go up or down in any given year. It seems that 2006 will be the year that competition for the top colleges was as extreme as it gets. I don't believe that 2007-2009 will be any different. At least in my mind.

Good luck with the interview.

Thanks redlinekid2- Try to get their feedback and apply again. This is always seen as a positive. Good Luck for the rest of your applications.

redlinekid2 -- I'm sorry Columbia GS didn't work out. I know how important it was to you. Keep looking. I know you will land in a good place because I can tell that you are determined to make it happen. That is half the battle.

Yeah... redlinekid2... hang in there... the more you keep up with it the better your results will be... I know you'll be graduating from a top-notch program and going onto do wonderful things very soon. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I am filling out my application for UPENN's College of General Studies for the Fall 2007 Semester. If I'm rejected by them, then I'll just focus my efforts on The Harvard Extension School.

I certainly wouldn't care if anyone thinks that the Extension School is not as good as Harvard College. But at least it'll give me access to a Harvard Education. That's all that matters to me. If I am to a get a BA degree, it has to be at the top colleges where the academic resources are plentiful as well as the intellectual climate.

I knew someone who went to Harvard Extension and was able to move on to the Harvard Business School. Good luck!

@redlinekid2: Condolences on your rejection, especially after the vigor you showed during our PM conversations months ago. However, if you keep working towards your goals, I'm sure that this rejection will only prove to be a minor setback, in retrospect. :)

@viper79: I was one of the last accepted for the current semester -- I was interviewed quite late in the decisions process. I am not sure what the admissions rep will ask, specifically, but the guy that interviewed me really dragged me over the coals for about an hour or so. And the questioning was -rough-. I cannot underscore that enough. My advice would be to emphasize why you think a CU education would be for you, and why GS is the place for you. The sense that I got from my interview is that they are looking for people who will make a difference in the GS community -- not necessarily someone who merely has astounding numbers and qualifications. They are looking for unique individuals. I've had conversations with a few people here who were, quite honestly, better qualified than me in terms of raw numbers, but for some reason, that is not enough in the eyes of the GS adcom.

And I really need to get back to studying for finals. I'll be so happy once I can do something other than closet myself in a quiet place over in the Barnard Library. (Butler is way too crowded.)

Aw, redlinekid, I'm so sorry you got rejected. Best of luck with UPenn. :)

Congrats to all who were accepted! You're in for an interesting experience, to say the least.

Secrets&Dreams-Thanks for the advice. The interview is in 12 hours!
