GSMP Requirements?

Hey, so I'm a Pakistani Female but I don't know if I'm allowed to apply for GMS because here are the requirements:

•Reducing financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need;

I'm Pakistani...meaning I'm asian...can I still apply?

^
No, unfortunately you are not eligible.

Really? Asian kids can’t apply? That sucks.

GA2012MOM, just wanted to clear this up so future GMS Applicants don’t get confused.

The Indian Subcontinent kids CAN apply :)

Here’s what is says on their website:

What ethnic groups comprise Asian Pacific Islander Americans?
Asian Pacific Islander Americans include persons having origin from Asia and/or the Pacific Islands. Asian includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent. Pacific Islander includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawai’i, Guam, Samoa or other Pacific Islands. Citizens of the republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau are also eligible to be nominated.

Quick question for those in the know…are permanent residents (NOT yet U.S. citizens) receive the Gates scholarship. I know it’s generally for citizens of the U.S. but wondered if permanent resident status would fulfill this requirement. The OP of this thread appears to be a permanent resident but not yet a citizen (perhaps the OP can clarify this).

Yeah all you have to be is a legal resident of the U.S. Let me find you some quotes to clarify,

"•Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States
•Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED
"

So yes, legal residents of the U.S. are eligible.

I am pretty sure Pakistani would be eligible to apply. If I recall correctly, the APIASF group I was in was discussing how everyone in high school who looked Middle Eastern was called “Indian”, and there were people in my group who were not Indian but were Middle Eastern but called Indian. So Pakistani people must have been able to apply if we were discussing that topic.
