Plans change. If DS was dead set on becoming a doctor then it might not be necessary to major in BME at all. Since he’s going the BME route then he should make the best decision with regards to BME period. If you have full tuition at GT then it’s a no-brainer IMO. He loves the school (a big +) and its significantly cheaper than the other alternatives. Medical school if and when it happens is going to cost a LOT of money. So bank the savings by going to GT.

As a dad of a PS in GT I can only encourage you to send your kid to this program - seriously! This program is amazing; the staff challenges the kids to go above and beyond and supports them at the same time if needed. They offer them opportunities that I doubt the other schools can keep up with!

Additionally, you could save ~50k/year compared to Rice/WashU, and your son LOVED it?

Don’t worry about GT being ‘tough’ - if your son is a PS finalist, he has the ability to cope with that - and quite easily, I’d say! And, btw - did you think Rice and WashU would be any easier on your son?

As a physician and mother of a PS senior in BME at GaTech I can vouch for the PS program and the school. They deliver the promises they make and provide the PSs with great leadership training and support. While the director of the program has changed, I am sure the program will remain stellar. That being said, the academic support at Ga Tech comes primarily from fellow students. There does not seem to be the cut throat competition that is supposedly present at some other high powered schools. Ga Tech has a ton of school spirit and a vibrant Greek system. My son has loved being a Yellow Jacket! He had 5 job offers (all in business, his minor and what he found he really enjoyed) before Halloween and he was competing with students from Harvard, UChicago, Yale, Princeton, etc. My youngest son, however, who was also accepted to GaTech, Rice, Vanderbilt, and Wash U will probably be going to Rice. We think he would benefit from a smaller school with a better student:teacher ratio and the residential college system. We may have had to reconsider if he had been chosen as a PS. Congrats to your son!

jtractay: Do you have any insight into the honors program at GT? My child is trying to decide between Rice and the GT Honors Program. My child is not a PS. If child was, it would be a no brainer. Is the honors program full of PS?
