I’m currently in a dilemma deciding between GTech’s Industrial and Systems Engineering program and UC Berkeley’s Industrial Engineering/Operations Research program. I am instate for UC Berkeley. How are the classes/internships for IEOR at Georgia Tech, and how much faculty support does the school provide. In addition, can someone elaborate on the Co-Op program, and life in Atlanta as a Tech student?
GaTech offers some really top outdoor education programs, including rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking.
The campus is close to the southern Appalachia: http://www.crc.gatech.edu/programs/outdoor
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics swimming pool, is now the Recreation center at GaTech. Its a fabulous facility
with both leisure pool and lap lanes, as well as slides and diving boards.
The city has art, music, and great restaurants. Its very nice three season weather, hot in the summers
when you will be back in CA working.
I generally don’t put much stock in rankings, but the fact that GT has the #1 ranked program for 23 straight years says a lot. It’s also the largest IE program by far, more than twice the size of the next largest. IE grads are in demand by every industry, and employers know where to go for the deepest pool of top students. Pretty much every student lands their choice of internships and jobs. There are only a handful of programs (i.e. Wharton finance) where just the name is a seal of approval and gets you in the door in many places. GT IE is one of them. And as Berkeley is also top notch, you can’t go wrong either way.
