Gtech pre-med and BME

I’m currently a freshman pre-med, Bio major at GSU thinking about transferring to Tech next year. I’ve heard a lot of people say that its almost impossible to get above a 3.5 GPA in Tech, which is important for med school, but I also really like the BME department’s opportunities for research and the connection to Emory.

I guess what I’m saying is, is it worth it to transfer? GSU has been really easy for me and I would graduate sooner with a higher GPA. However, I think a Gtech degree would be a really good safety net if I don’t get into med school.

Please help!

A large number of Tech students graduate with above a 3.5 GPA. Just look at the names starting on page 27 of this commencement book: https://commencement.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/images/spring-commencement-2019.pdf Anyone with *** next to their name had at least a 3.55 GPA in order to earn highest honor. The listing of BME graduates starts on page 30 and you can see that 49% of them (74/151) had at least a 3.55 GPA.

If your goal is just to go to a medical school and you think it will be easy for you to maintain a high GPA at GSU while completing the other “prerequisites” of getting into medical school, then there is no compelling reason for you to transfer. I do agree that, in general, you’ll have stronger employment options as a Tech engineering graduate than as a GSU biology graduate, but if medical school is your goal, that’s a moot point.

Decide what you want to do and then make a decision, but coming to Tech is not going to ruin your GPA and many students are very successful here. Just know that you may have to work harder to get the same grades.
