gtech worklife and social life

Hey guys I am currently considering Georgia tech for industrial engineering. However going through the older threads and posts, I feel scared and am having second thoughts. Could you guys tell me about the work load in industrial engineering, amount of free time for gym, hanging out, down time. Don't get me wrong, I know engineering is tough and will require hard work but the picture that I have painted in my head is something I don't really want to go through. Also is the ratio girls to boys getting better. How is it in industrial engineering?

I’m a freshman i’m my second semester and majoring in chemical engineering so I can give you a little advice. So far it hasn’t been nearly as bad as all the stuff I used to read online and such. Yes, it is hard but like you said it’s engineering and it’s one of the best engineering schools out there so it’s not gonna be easy. I work out 4 days a week, play a lotta basketball with my friends, eat out with them pretty often and still get my work done. It’s all about time management. I’m taking 18a hours and pretty much what I do is try to get some work done ahead of time so I’m not up until early hours in the morning working (which has happened white a few tines already this semester). Don’t worry about girls. As long as you’re not super socially awkward (and there are soooooo many people like that here) you’ll be fine.

Oh also, if you’re looking to party every weekend, don’t come here haha

hey man thanks the gym is amazing. And lol at the last part. also, I’ve seen since threads about dorms. if you got some time could you shed light on which are the best. which offer the best food. just curious. And Ya I played basketball in high school with hard schedule so I have some experience with time management. just gonna have to step it up

It’s not as bad as people make it sound but how much free time you will have depends entirely on how efficiently you study, how quick you catch on, and what kind of grades you’re comfortable getting. You won’t have as much free time as in high school but it’s entirely possible to get a 4.0 without ever having to study on the weekends (except for maybe the weekend before finals week or before a lot of things happen to be due at the same time). Of course, that requires you really make good use of your time during the week.

kamel: thanks, I certainly understand that I need to have good work ethic. I know Georgia tech has a great college coop program especially for industrialengineering with college fairs. when do students start that. their first year orlater on?

I know there’s a career fair coming up in like two weeks I think and quite a few of my friends are going out there and looking at applying and such (freshmen). You’re not gonna get a co-op your first year. Not to discourage you, I know like 3 kids that got interviews but none of them got jobs. I’m not planning to co-op until my second semester sophomore year cuz I’ll have already taken my first major specific class. And yea I’ve heard Industrial Engineers get quite a few co-op opportunities. Make sure you get involved in extracurriculars as well.

And the freshman dorms…just come in expecting the worst and then prepare to be disappointed haha. And dear God make sure you get a roommate that cleans. Mine doesn’t shower often and hardly ever cleans his side of the room and since the rooms are so freakin tiny, his mess just spills over to my side and it looks like im super messy as well. (Hint:random is not the way to go). Food is meh; I’ve been to Emory a few times and the food there is quite a bit better.

And yea the CRC is amazing. My friends and i go there a ton to play ball
