G'Town Early Chances

I'm thinking of applying early to either College or SFS.

SAT: CR:750/M:670 = 1420 (taking three SAT dos' in October)
GPA: 3.92 uw, like 5.1? w
Rank: 6/266 - at a top public high school (according to newsweek anyway)

Classes: I'll graduate having taken 11 or 12 APs. My schedule is the most difficult of anyone at my school (scores from soph. year were Euro-4, World-3)

ECs: Student Council Prez, Young Republicans Prez, Varsity Swim Captain, Volleyball MVP, Varsity XC, Eagle Scout, Governor's School delegate, elected Boys' State Attorney General, Boys' Nation Alternate, Cum Laude - Latin National Exam, Academic Bowl State Runner up, Science Olympiad Gold Medal Winner, Math League Medalist, Mock Trial Gavel Winner, will be probably Commended for National Merit (210 in DE)

Volunteering: DFRC - "Delaware Federation for Reaching Citizens" (formerly Delaware Federation for Retarded Children), 30 hours a summer at church's VBS, Boy Scout stuff, Local River clean ups, Key Club member, Political Volunteering (over 300 hours in the '02 and '04 election seasons)

Work: Lifeguard (Red Cross certified) and Swim Lesson Teacher

Recs: Teachers will be great, also, a Rec from Federal Judge, who is G'town Law alum

Essay: Will be top notch of course.

Now the question is - should I apply to College or SFS. I enjoy politics and whatnot, but I want to go to law school and become a prosecuter. I'm leaning towards College. Will my SATs and Ranking be alright for early admission?

And I am allowed to apply elsewhere also for early admission?

Post your thoughts.

-GSR

P.S. Oh yea, I'm a White Male. Affirmative Action = so ridiculous.

The truth is that College is very hard to get into... since the majority of the applicants are going to apply there .... it might be easier to get into SFS.... however.. you must take SAT II's and do good in them.

the RC from the Judge who is a Georgetown Law Alum will be the BIGGEST asset in this process...

I would recommend the SFS... chances seem higher.. if you do not like it the first yr. u can always transfer to College

SFS is just as selective, if not even more selective than College.

Also, I don't have the foreign language expertise for SFS.
No Spanish, German or French.

Latin - what, what?

SFS is a bit more selective than the regular college. Although the acceptance rate is (percentage-wise) a tad bit higher (2%), the College has a larger applicant pool and thus, a larger admissions pool as well.

Sen- you and my D have nearly identical stats. She even takes latin. She is planning to apply EA. I believe you can meet language requirements for SFS while enrolled--think it said that on their website. I am curious if you were thinking EA or RD.

Do you think that the business school is easier to get accepted to than SFS or the College?

Please do not apply to a specific school merely because it will increase your chances, such an act would be insipid.

What additional requirements would the business school have that the college would not? Do they look at specific tests or scores more than others? Any special make or break activities?

I think that since you want to become a prosecutor, the place to apply wuold be the college. They have an excellent political science program, and there is a wider range of flexibility and would most likely fit your needs the best. Don't apply to a school just because you think your chances might be better there-- in fact, it is more difficult to get into SFS... and they except fluency in a foreign language, which would be difficult for Latin, although i may be mistaken. Anyway, go for the college

Sen, you have a great chance. Its scary how similar to my ECs and stats you are. I was accepted EA last year. I faced a similar dilemma, I want to continue on to law school, and decided to apply to the college for a government major instead of SFS. Too much language and international stuff for my interests. This is what I recommend for you. Also, I must caution the use of outside recommendations, does this man know you personally? If not, I would not go through with it, extra stuff can sometimes be detrimental if it is seen as superficial. Also, your rank is great, but rank is big at Georgetown. Maybe you can move up in the next few months. Also, I hope you didn't send that 3 to georgetown.

you can't use Latin as fluency for SFS, so you'd have to start a new language when you got here, and then pass proficiency. in theory, it wouldn't be hard if you were dedicated.

it is my understanding that you should NOT apply to SFS because it's easier. SFS is more selective in the fact that the people who apply (and are accepted there) are EXTREMELY internationally minded...the majors are fairly specific and the core is very focused.

and the 3 on the AP test, who cares? I got a one on physics and I was still accepted. plus a three in English and spanish. not all of us can go to elite private schools (or even top notch public schools), and Georgetown knows that.

anyway you slice it, you're a very strong applicant for any of Georgetown's schools.

I didn't send any AP scores anywhere yet.

And I'm not applying to any particular school because that school may be less selective. I'm just like Brenner. I want to do a government major, or something very similar. Some majors are in College, and some majors are in SFS. I am pretty sure I'm gonna go for College.

And to roadtested, my guess is that if you apply to a university's easiest school just to be admitted, you probably won't be accepted. My friend applied to Wharton, Sloane, Olin, etc., and she said the admissions people can immediately tell if you are a legit Business major.

Oh yea - the judge is my friend's dad. His rec will be brief, to the point, and good. He knows me through sports and school stuff. Whatever.

SFS is extremely selective. They look at your "international" interests, foreign language skills, and only take around 200 students. Also, Georgetown is one place that is impossible to switch schools, so don't apply to one school, if your intention is to switch later. Just go with the college.

My interest in business school is not about selectivity. It is about how to strategize the application process. My interest is management. I can get a history or poli sci or IR major at the college and take marketing and management classes. Or try for the business school and minor in one of these. Or other special programs. Or choose someplace else with a business minor. Lots of ways to play my cards, and I am looking for the smartest one.

Okay, so what is a "legit" business major looking like?

chocoholic, before I denounce you, I am giving you a chance to explain the comment regarding 200 students. This figure is wildly inaccurate.

Brenner, what IS the actual incoming class size?

It Is Very Easy To Change Schools!!!!!!!

hrrrrm..I want to say like 800 but that's way too big. I'm pretty sure the entire SFS is 1500??? Can I get a confirm on that?

(these are things I SHOULD, in theory, know, but to be quite honest there are too many numbers floating around in my life these days! ;) )

ok, so perhaps my 800 came from # of admitted early or something. perhaps I pulled it out of the air. but yes. not important.

however, SFS is 1500 total, according to the website. yay me!
