Now, I'm not sure that I could get into Gtown (let alone pay for it). Would it be safe to say that I could get into GWU and that they'd give me some sort of money? My reason for this is that I do love DC (favorite city) and I want to pursue intl. politics/relations/ studies (whatever you wish to call it).

Fairly decent stats, SAT being something that might work against me (770 CR, 640 M, 710 Writing and I can't really take them again since I need to take SATIIs). 3.96 UW, 4.64 W gpa, 6/452 Rank...Kind of average Ec's (band/orchestra/NHS/TRIM/SNHS...and thensome).

You shouldn't have too much trouble getting in at Georgetown. I live in the D.C. area and while it is a very respectable school, I wouldn't say it is incredibly difficult to get in, especially with your SAT scores.

You might also want to look at the University of Maryland at College Park. It's close enough to DC that students there can have internships in DC or go to DC frequently for other purposes, but it's easier to get into than Georgetown and cheaper than either Georgetown or GW.

My sister got into the GWU honors program and with about 8k/semester scholarship with a 3.8-3.9ish, 1490, and interesting EC's with good leadership, including founding a still-running tutoring organization and heavy involvement in our school's radio station.

I think she had to petition to get as much money as she's getting now because they offered less when they admitted her. I think it's safe to say that you'll get into GWU. I think the merit-based financial aid is primarily based on GPA, rank, and SAT scores, so you should get some money, too. Make sure you go to DC after you get your aid package and talk to someone from the aid office in person with your parents and tell them why they should give you more money (I believe my sister talked about how other schools like American and NYU were offering her a couple thousand more, and she got it in the end).

look at america and howard. howard may be jsut as good as GW with lower costs. even if GW gives you 25k you still pay 25k from your pocket. georgetown is easier to get into if you arent from DC and you have a shot (so long as you dont want to do IR). if cost is a big thing, look at the naval academy. not too far from DC and its free*

I don't want you to be misled. Much of the information on this thread is not based on facts, just opinions. It is quite difficult to be accepted to Georgetown. From our school system, with a high school in the top 5% of the nation, no one with your stats was accepted by Georgetwon last year. The three people who were accepted had SATs of 2250+. In addition, a 2250did not guarantee admission, as a few other students with these stats were not admitted. (Perhaps the requirements are lower if you are a student in D.C.) As for GWU, there is a good chance you would qualify for merit aid and ,depending on your financial situation, you might also qualify for need-based aid. If so, your expenses could be very reasonable. Also look at American, where you would definately receive some merit.

Yeah, Georgetown is still a reach for you. I was just commenting on GWU.

I don't see how Howard is anywhere near how good as GWU in your expected fields. You should look at American, too, but it it's more on the rim of the city (like Georgetown) than right in it, as GWU and UDC are. It's international studies programs are still pretty good, though. Actually I think it's one of their strongest points.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I was kind of worried about GWU's price, but the fact that they offer merit aid is enticing. Also, I don't mind if some of these are opinions, most everyone on here is fairly well researched. Best of luck to everyone!

I'll agree with everyone else in saying that that GWU is definitely out of most people's budgets. The merit aid is nice, but for many people like myself, it still isn't enough. I received the Presidential Scholarship, which covers half-tuition. Even with that scholarship, and a grant, they wanted me to pay about 3 times my EFC.

Georgetown and GWU both have very different environments... Check them out if you haven't already. Georgetown is a reach for everyone who applies, but there's definitely no harm in applying.

Lots of schools not in DC offer summer internship opportunities there, as well as study abroad-like programs during the academic year... So check out other schools and see what kinds of things they offer. I would also suggest applying to schools near big cities, where there would be internships nearby.
