G'town vs. Northwestern vs. Johns Hopkins

Which one is the best?
I want to major in either political science, international politics or journalism.
I'm interested in social life, school spirirt, academic prestige, reputation, location, the whole shaband\g (HA).

I would go to Georgetown.

Georgetown
Northwestern
JHU

in that order.

I'd chose between Northwestern and Georgetown. Johns Hopkins is excellent too, but it has very little school spirit and its location is only so-so. If you go to Georgetown, my recommendation would be to focus on International Relations rather than Political Science.

I concur, northwestern or Georgetown.

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY. no JHU, no NU.

you are IN D.C. (white house, capitol hill), close to Georgetown (great place to hang out). you'll have great social life and great exposure to politics.

P.S. Georgetown girls are smoking hot.

NU
JHU
Georgetown

Socially JHU takes a giant back seat to both of the other ones here.

I'd be biased to say Georgetown because I was accepted :). Really though, they're good at different things.
Georgetown- international relations, poli sci etc.
JHU- science, medical schooll
Northwestern- journalism, etc.

It is common to confuse International Relations with Political Science. The two are very different. It's like comparing Engineering to Physics or Business to Economics. Georgetown is amazing in International Relations but not that great in Political Science.

I agree that it's between Georgetown and Northwestern. Which location do you prefer? Georgetown has proximity to internship opportunities, etc. However, if you plan to live in the Chicago area, Northwestern may be better.

For journalism or political science - Northwestern
For international relations - Georgetown

are you going to apply to all three? --> you can always just wait to see where you get in...

the term 'political science' was coined at jhu

I think you guys are nitpicking the details, none of these is any better or really any worse at these academic areas. Gtown's advantage is its proximity to Washington.

Georgetown for polic sci or international relations; Northwestern for Journalism. if you're looking for a social life JHU doesn't have one according to lots of people. I live between G'Town and JHU so I've got a sense for both of them

Actually, Northwestern's Political Science department is significantly better than Goergetown's.

Yeah but its not going to make any difference in the end. AND the kid isn't even sure of his major yet. This isn't grad school. Access to DC more than makes up for the difference.

anyone else

All three schools are more or less comparable in terms of selectivity and prestige. They are all good choices.

Johns Hopkins differs from Northwestern and Georgetown in several respects. JHU is smaller, less socially active, and located in a less stimulating urban area. Northwestern and Georgetown have Division I athletics, while JHU is Division III (except, of course, in lacrosse). I don't think JHU has a journalism program.

On the other hand, JHU has very strong master's-level offerings in international studies, which undergraduates can take advantage of via 5-year accelerated BA/MA programs. You spend three years at the JHU Homewood campus in Baltimore, then two years at either:

JHU's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington DC, or

the SAIS campus in Bologna, Italy, or

Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in Paris (must speak French)

A master's degree from SAIS may well be the most prestigious degree of its kind in the US, and a Diplome from Sciences Po may well be the most prestigious of its kind in Europe. Sciences Po has exchange programs with Georgetown and Northwestern, but not a joint degree program as with JHU.

If you are ultimately considering graduate study in international relations, then the accelerated BA/MA options at JHU are really exceptional.
