Guaranteed Acceptance?

I was accepted into the Swartmore Multicultural Weekend ( one of the 150 students chosen from a pool of about 500 applicants) and my counselors say that I'm virtually guaranteed acceptance since the admissions office has already seen all of my credentials and would not have given me a free trip unless they really wanted me at their school. What is your opinion?

With Swarthmore (and most top colleges) nothing's guaranteed. Obviously admissions is confusing. You probably have a very good chance - but never assume that something's guaranteed. :]

Yeah, I'm not going to get too big-headed, but I'm going to assume I pretty much shouldn't have much to worry about. My reccommendations were very good and I wrote a good Why Swarthmore essay. Also my SAT score has come up since they last saw it so yeah

sounds pretty big headed to me. justified or no, im not seeing the point of this post.

um that was sorta rude. I see a point to this post. I was wondering other people's opinion. If you don't see a point to the post don't read it and don't reply.

Well again, Swat rejects plenty of applicants with perfect SAT scores and probably "good" essays and recs. No one's going to be able to give you a totally accurate reading on your chances. Like I said, they're good, but nothing's for sure. :]

Likewise, don't assume that you shouldn't have much to worry about - haha, with college admissions, again, there should never be any assumptions. :D

Thanks for your opinion. I don't want to be like "I'm in" and then get the small envelope and have my world crushed. I'm going to just be cool about it.

With Swarthmore, the small envelope might be the one that says congratulations!

ShaquitaPack:

I have no way of knowing whether you are a shoe-in or not. I know that there have been students here in past years who were flown to Discovery Weekend and not accepted to Swarthmore. So, it's certainly not guaranteed.

Having said that, the acceptance rate from Discovery Weekend attendees is high and those students usually have an edge with preparing a good application (Why Swarthmore?, etc.).

Maybe the best mindset might be "cautiously optimistic"? Best of luck to you and everyone else who has applied.

I remember a kid last year whining on CC about the injustice of being flown out for Discovery weekend on Swarthmore's dime, getting an application waiver and then getting waitlisted (or outright rejected, I don't remember). I think the gist of his complaint was how fiscally irresponsible that Swarthmore would waste the amount of money they did just to turn around and tell him he didn't make the cut.

why should that even matter. This discovery weekend business sounds like a lot of fun, and if swarthmore's paying, hell whats there to complain about?

Do they invite you for discovery weekend if you have already visited and interviewed on campus?

do you want to know why i think this is pointless? chances posts on their own dont really serve a purpose, seeing as no one on this board is qualified to make admissions decisions, nor will they be the ones making the decisions. but on top of that, your "chances post" doesnt even include stats. its you saying your counselor thinks youre in. what kind of opinions are you looking for exactly? the same kind your counselor already gave you?

I dunno, if they ask you again if you've visited....ummm probably not? Part of the visit is an interview but I dunno if everyone there hadn't had one. If you're not a minority they won't invite you.

I'm almost positive that students who have already visited Swarthmore have been invited to Discovery Weekend.

Discovery Weekend is a recruiting tool...an opportunity to entertain a specific group of students Swarthmore would like to encourage to apply.

Honestly, Discovery Weekend REALLY REALLY hooks you in. The campus is gorgeous and everyone is so warm and inviting. Unluckily for me I had a sucky host who dumped me and her other spec (prospective student) on her roommate.

Maybe your Discovery weekend host just wasn't that into you. You do seem to have entitlement issues based upon the tone of your postings.

That was uncalled for. Havin' a bad day?

no, it was definitely called for.

Not from what ShaquitaPack posted here. I didn't read the original post as big-headed at all. This is a minority student, invited to Discovery Weekend, whose high school counselors are saying "guaranteed, you're in".

I actually think ShaquitaPack is smart to get some other opinions. I couldn't rate admissions chances one way or another except that I know "guaranteed, you're in" is not good advice when it comes to Swarthmore.

I really don't see the point of being rude to high school students, who have visited Swarthmore, sent in their applications, and are asking questions.
