guaranteed admit for deferred intel semis?

if someone was deferred EA and became an intel semifinalist, what are the chances of being accepted? is that title so valuable in the deferred pool, or does harvard really give significant priority to only finalists?

What is this intel malarky you all keep going on about?

It would help but it doesn't guarantee anything. Lots of intel semi-s were deferred EA (check EA decisions thread)

I have never heard of semi's as a hook. And even finalist is no guarantee at Harvard, tho I believe it is at Stanford.

It's a prestigeous science competition for high school students that is sponsored by Intel:

http://www.intel.com/education/sts/

intel semis couldn't have been deferred EA since u get the award on Jan 11. Ur prolly talking about Siemens Semis.

Umm... I might be. I'm not a science guy. I definitely saw Siemens being deferred but I could have sworn I saw intels being deferred too - but if its impossible then I guess Im wrong :)

I know, personally (family), of people being deferred EA Harvard, then waitlisted, then rejected. So, no, Intel Semi-finalist does not guarantee admission.

Nothing guarantees admission to Harvard.

^^ That's not true.

^ care to elaborate, gxing?

Realistically, I think anything short of a nobel prize is not a guarentee to H (besides a new library or stadium, I guess)

Just a few things:

Dad is president
Nobel prize
Cured cancer
Cured aids
Won pulitzer prize
Family donates >100 million to harvard
Wins US open or any other grand slam

I'm pretty sure any of those factors alone would get you in.

Heh, gxing, your list basically excludes everyone but Christopher Paolini and perhaps Donald Young heh.:)

Did Paolini go to college?

haha, I'm 8th place Intel and I'll probably get rejected :p

Intel semis is awesome and should give you a nice boost, but I know a finalist who was rejected at MIT. It's not guaranteed (nothing is) in the SLIGHTEST.

That's HYPSM et al. Nothing can guarantee admission.

Again, I'm pretty sure any of the things I listed would guarantee admission.

CONGRATULATIONS GMARS!!!!!! What a terrific outcome! Did you have a good time in D.C.? My s. really loved his time there. Also, congrats on your other acceptances!

Hey, thanks!! Yeah, it was seriously the most amazing time EVER--the best week of my life, no exaggeration. But I'm sure you've already heard plenty about it in your house!! I blogged about it, if you or your son is curious how it went this year :) stsfinals.blogspot.com
