I was actually wondering this as well…so Im posting for the sake of bumping.

But, to elaborate, could you go so far as to transfer between colleges…say from HumEc to Engineering, for example?

^ I think it’s really difficult/possibly impossible <hah to switch colleges with a GT, but I’m not certain. I’m glad I researched this already, since I basically knew I was getting this since December.

join this group guys

I had a friend who switched from CAS to HumEc after his 1st year…it’s possible, but difficult to do after 1 year…prob near impossible to do junior year since you’d have to complete the new college’s distribution requirements

On that same subject, how bout Natural Resources to Environmental Engineering (within Cals).

Hi dewdrop,

I got a gt for ILR! HoweverILR is pretty much the only school that offers ILR type courses. So I have two questions:

1) Would I have trouble catching up with ILR requirments after about 24 credits or so of general credits?

2) Given the one year of liberal arts study that I will do before entering ILR, would it be impossible to change my mind and transfer into another school at Cornell (say CALS or CAS)? What I mean is since I will already have one year to fulfill general requirments, would it still be impossibe to transfer to another school at Cornell, in, say, Spring semester of Sophomore year or Fall semester of Junior year?

Thanks!

Also, I know that people tend to get p*issed off when you ask about transferring out of ILR, so let me be clear. I Love Reading. I spent so much time researching and inquiring about this school after I visited Cornell, and I decided that this could be my calling. However, as much research as I’ve done, I still don’t have any first hand knowledge of the curriculum and as much as it intrigues and excites me now, I am just a little worried that I might not like it.

1.) Follow your ILR GT requirements closely. If you take Gen Ed courses and Bing…those tend to do a good job of filling most general distribution requirements.

2.) Transferring to a new college within Cornell is easier after one year, and you can’t even do it after your junior year. For instance, CALS has a 4 semester residency requirement. So you can do it after sophomore year. If you do it during your junior year, you’d have to stay an extra semester or two.

Ok thanks dewdrop. So I should not be worried about falling behind if I decide ILR is not for me. as long as I do not change majors or colleges after my my junior year at Cornell, i should have no problems graduating in four years..right?

Thanks, once again

No…if you plan well you should have nothing to worry about. Part of the requirements for doing an internal transfer require that you take certain courses in the major you’d like to apply to so you would have some of that work taken care of.

Thanks! All of this is so premature and I do not even know why I am asking this question now. But thanks for dealing with my ridiculousness.

Changing your major within the same college (as OP wants to do) wouldn’t be nearly as hard as changing your major and changing colleges. Call up your college’s admissions office, see what they say. There’s a good chance they’ll want to help you out. :)
