guaranteed transfers? what??

can someone please explain to me? i got rejected at cornell rd, and they sent me a stupid email about transferring sophomore year, but i didn't get the impression that it's guaranteed because it just invites you to apply....couldn't anyone apply as a transfer student anyhow?

i am so soso confused....

look at the other guaranteed transfer threads…

Guaranteed transfer is a program at Cornell where students who were qualified to be admitted (but weren’t due to space restrictions) are invited to apply as a transfer after one year elsewhere. You have to make a certain GPA and take certain classes at the other school, and if you meet the requirements you automatically admitted as a transfer student when you apply sophomore year.

I don’t know if the email you receive is the same program. Call admissions and ask if you’re a guaranteed transfer.

that’s so strange…about what percent of rejected applicants received this invitation?

Not sure. It’s just another layer of admissions decisions:
Accepted
GT
Waitlist
Rejected

so im guessing it’s worse than being waitlisted?

I think it’s a step up. Waitlisted means you’re a backup if someone they actually want decides not to go. GT means they simply don’t have room for you right now, but do want you to come back.

altho it is not the decision you wanted now, many students do accept the “guaranteed transfer” or “transfer option” and end up at Cornell, happily. Certain programs at Cornell have limited space and therefore can not accept all the students they would like. Freshman housing is also limited.

Admissions is open today for the first time since regular decisions went out - so they will be swamped. If you can wait a few days and think about your options, calling later may get you a better chance to talk to someone at Cornell. Good luck with whatever you decide.
