Guessing

All the books and everything say that if you can eliminate one answer, you should guess, This a good idea?

lol i dont think so.
in my eyes, eliminating 1 answer is not enough. i would guess only if i eliminate 2 or more..
grammatix said u should never guess.

logically yes, with all the probability stuff.
but then, i dont really trust probability. if u have good karma, then guess if you can eliminate one answer.

^ partially true lol, probability does play a partial role xD

Given 20 questions and a 1/4 penalty for guessing, elimination no answers will give you 0 points if you don't answer any of them, and 0 points if you guess on all of them (1/5 chance of getting each correct = 4 correct out of 20 -> 4 - .25x16 = 4-4 = 0)

If you eliminate 1 answer, then you manage to salvage 5/4 points for guessing, compared to 0 points for leaving them all blank (5-.25x15 = 5-15/4 = 5/4).

Eliminating more answers will allow you to get even more points when guessing.

Moral: Guessing can never hurt you (statistically speaking, of course; you could guess and get all of them wrong, lol, even if you've eliminated all but 2 answers. It's highly improbable though), even if you don't eliminate any answers. If you eliminate even one, it can only help.

I agree with Moodrets, but one thing to remember is that the math he worked out with expected probability was based on the law of large numbers so you may not get higher if you eliminate 1 answer choice if you guess on only like 3 questions. His idea is based on the idea that you have an unlimited number of questions. Then in the long run, you will get a higher score guessing that omitting. But even though i said that, i still guess on questions when I can just eliminate 1 question.

I agree with Moodrets. I notice that when people omit one, they are more inclined to omit others just because they don't feel they have enough time. However, I wouldn't spend more than a minute on it before moving on.
