So any cool ones recently? :) and how often?

Cornell actually has a lot of guest lecturers/speakers… U can visit cornell.edu and it is filled with guest lecturers.

More than you could ever possibly imagine:

[Cornell University - Events Calendar](<a href=“Events Calendar - Cornell”>Events Calendar - Cornell)

well John Cleese last weekend was pretty darn awesome.

If you go to the individual departments’ websites, they usually have a listing of recent or upcoming speakers.

The general Events calendar shows speakers who present to the university community (I mean, anyone can go to see John Cleese or Stephen Colbert and have fun). But there are many, many, many speakers hosted by individual departments who give specific, intimate, interesting lectures (usually followed by free food )

Cool!

Was curious, when more “notable” speakers are coming to campus, how do people find about them? Besides word of mouth. Do they just check these sites or what?

John Cleese was last Sunday

Bill Nye was here on Tuesday and Wednesday

Ellie Krieger from the Food Network will be here on Friday.

I am sure there are always others.

notable like famous people? there will be posters all over the walls. I first found about Cleese coming when I saw a sign hanging on a bulletin board in my dorm. then I went to my room and looked up the details online.
for people like Colbert (or bands/rappers/etc) who require tickets, I’m pretty sure they send emails ahead about when you can get them.

for notable people in your field you might get emails too. I get emails about appearances that would be of interest to CALS students, for example, or people with my major. I didn’t have do to anything to start receiving them. in fact sometimes I wish they’d leave my inbox alone, but overall it’s good, and I’ve gone to many events I otherwise wouldn’t have known about. and gotten some of that great free food! :)

well besides celebrities, i meant like politicians and renowned professors in hard sciences and stuff :)

We have that too. Amartya Sen - the Nobel-prize winning Harvard economist (not a hard scientist, but a renowned professor) - was just here. One of the princes of Saudi Arabia will be speaking this weekend, I believe. There’s never a shortage of impressive people who visit campus.

last year the dali lama came in october

BIll Nye’s always around lol

the amartya sen lecture was amazing. i don’t think i’ve ever seen call auditorium THAT packed - not even during orientation when there was a mandatory meeting for all new CALS freshmen, and THAT’S saying something.

^now it’s worth noting that wasn’t aware that Amartya Sen was going to be here. I didn’t find out until the event had already occurred. I am not sure why. (if I remember correctly, I couldn’t have gone anyway, but I would’ve liked to to’ve had the choice…)

It’s not hard to peruse the events calendar on a periodic basis.

there’s always stuff going on the bad thing is when you cant make it :(

Jay Walker was here last week, he was really cool. He’s the CEO of priceline.com

@ faustarp: are you in any economics/int’l studies related courses? bc my AEM classes dealing with trade absolutely inundated us with information about it.
