Guidance for a seventh grader

Can you please give me guidance for the colleges?

I am in 7th grade in NYC. I have the highest grades in my school, my lowest ever so far being a 92. My classes are the regular ones my school offers.

The schools I want to apply to are Ivy Leagues like Harvard Princeton Brown Stanford and University of Chicago. My sister goes to Brown so I hear I am in for legacy, is this true?

Stay in school, don't do drugs, take challenging classes, get good grades, and do stuff that you like to do. Worry about the rest later.

Sorry to open on a down note, but you're not in at Brown in the 7th grade. You're not in at anywhere right now. If your school offers honours, you should be taking them now for the schools you mentioned. Also, if you are the top of your class with a 92 on your transcript, how competitive is your school? You certainly beat me :) but I have never heard of a very competitive school that doesn't also have middle school students with all grades above a 96 or in that range at the top of its class. In my personal experience at a competitive prep school, these students are also the ones on the highest honour track.

Your 7th grade grades, your 7th grade ECs (unless you build on them) and what your 7th grade teachers think of you won't matter on your application, except for what they indicate (you work hard, you get on well with your teachers). I'm sure you already know that. :) My advice, though, for a potential Ivy League applicant is to get on the honours track. High school is most likely going to be much more difficult than middle school, so anticipate it.

Planning ahead is good, but don't ruin your HS career by worrying about your Ivy chances. Nothing- nothing- guarentees you admission to an Ivy, no matter how hard you work, so try your hardest and make the most of it.

I agree completely with Carpe Aeternum.

As an added note, don't let the Ivy League cloud your vision. There are plenty of schools out there that are just as good if not better. Although you won't be research colleges a lot till junior year, just try not to let the Ivy League dream ferment for too long.

The most you can do now is continue what you've been doing -- working hard, staying active, and doing the things you love most. You will need this attitude in high school.

You're only in 7th grade. Relax a bit. When I was in 7th grade, I didn't even know about the ivies. And now I'm going to be attending Princeton in the fall. It just goes to show you that a lot of things can change for you in the next five years. Make good decisions, and good luck.

Riding a bicycle and playing with your Nintindo Wii. Enjoy the last days of being a child.

Throught the Looking Glass, I tell you.

How to get ready for college? Cancel your CC account. And research college in high school. The Ivy League is not the be-all and end-all of colleges worth attending. Don't bother setting your sights on one school.

I can tell you really don't know much of anything about colleges, as in your desire to attend Brown or Chicago. Really, relish these last days.

Get off CC! Your childhood is slipping away! You have at least more wonderful years without even having to THINK about this stuff...enjoy it!

The schools I want to apply to are Ivy Leagues like Harvard Princeton Brown Stanford and University of Chicago. My sister goes to Brown so I hear I am in for legacy, is this true?

Stanford and U Chicago aren't Ivy League. They are far better.

Jk... but not about chicago

Get as girlfriend and stay off CC!

Wow. Get out a bit. Seriously.

HaHa...the people above me have said what I wanted to say in a nutshell. So I will just be more blunt, GET A LIFE! You are in 7th grade! I was wondering what color panties the girl next to me was wearing, not where I wanted to go to college. Enjoy life before high school, then get serious.

dude college never slipped into my mind until 10th grade, all i cared about was girls and basketball. Enjoy your childhood, cuz when you hit 10th grade, where it counts (you will load yourself with AP's), your life is gone. Im going to a JC then transferring to non ivy leagues =).

Yes, 7th grade is much, much too early to worry about colleges. It looks more like you're concerned with the prestige of these schools rather than the fit (You'd need some safety schools, too). Wait until 9th grade and in high school at the earliest to get onto CC, but concentrate on your grades and schoolwork for now.

btw a legacy is when a parent has attended a school, not sure if siblings would qualify.

The competition to get into the ivy-league is so intense that it is never to early to start thinking about college, especially if you want to go to an ivy-league school. Students and parents should be implementing a strategy for an ivy-league school when the student enters the 6th grade in my opinion.

The best thing to do now, however, is to take the most challenging courses. The most challenging courses will help you earn a high SAT score. I'd also recommend narrowing in on something and becoming high distinguished in it. This could be basketball, karate, business, piano, etc. Your special talent will distinguish you from other candidates applying with similar academic credentials.

Well... you're only a seventh grader.

For now you can continue to coast through school a bit.

I'd say consider pumping up your social life a bit, have some fun (unless you already do!)

In middle school I pretty much chilled. Then is the time to think, wait to start doing until high school.

I wish the best of luck to you in the upcoming years.

P.S. If you can, take IB in high school - even then you can take additional AP courses, but it doesn't work the other way around ;)

What if i think i will want too major in math? i know that its early but i will want to, just took algebra this year and really like it, anything i can do to show admissions officers dedication to it?

Green rabbit,

You're in 7th grade. Stop worrying about colleges. You're being a freak. 10 years from now, no one will care how well you did in middle school. Make some friends, go out, and just live a little. Let some other loser get the highest grades in your middle school. What you do now doesn't matter at all in the college app process, and you shouldn't even be thinking about it until 10th grade.

When i was in 7th grade, I was researching a cure for cancer, and my lowest grade was a 102 (my Calc teacher HATED me). YOu seem to be way behind. I hear community college isn't that bad.

here's what you can do:

1) go home
2) turn on the TV
3) sit and watch nickelodeon for a few hours
4) go ride a bike

seriously, 7th and 8th grade are (to me) the last years you'll really have as a kid. enjoy them! worrying about college now will only get you burned out. you seem like a smart kid so if you're already like that save your strengths (and energy) for a few more years so you can do your best. trust me, it is absolutely EXHAUSTIVE and freaking out now won't do you any good.

good luck!
