Guide to an 800: Chemistry

yes i did get an 800

Big ups!!!

What is effective strategy to deal with equilibrium and acid-base numerical questions? Do I have to memorize virtually all chemical formulas in Barron’s AP Chem book?

nice guide! i only have 1 week to go before the sat xD, so i might just turn to my chemistry textbook to review rather than buy a bunch of books lol.

thanks for the link to the released tests too, btw. the more tests the better!

mansu007, what do you mean by numerical questions? sorry, i’m just unsure what you’re asking

Kudos to everyone who worked to make this guide so comprehensive, it really is impressive!
I’d just like to take this time and offer a piece of advice that I found sort of useful.

On the T T CE questions, I’ve generally noticed that when trying to decide if it’s a CE and you’re unsure, if the two sentences are even a little bit related and reasonable, they’re most likely correct.

Also, carefully reread the sentences. Make sure you don’t see “Ionic solutions conduct electricity”, and put true, when what’s really written is “Ionic solids conduct electricity”, which is false.

@mansu just read barrons and understand how equilibrium and acids and bases work then do practice tests that would help you practice with the numerical questions

123testing, one week=enough time for barrons

@hungryjoe, one person made this guide and your welcome.

bookmarked, thank you so much for this! I’ll definitely refer to this before I take the test. Would you say there are a lot of lab questions on the exam?

sjsharks - The SAT II subject tests that you’ve provided a link to are 10 - 20 years old . . . are they a fairly accurate representation of what’s on the test today? Just wondering if the test seems to have gotten easier or harder since then, or perhaps changed focus in any way. Thanks!

ecouter11, I would say there is a decent amount of lab questions. On the May test there was about 3.

dodgersmom, That was a concern I had as well but any practice is good practice in my opinion. They definetly are harder than the real since i got like a 720 on the 1994 test lol. I would take them keeping in mind they are just as hard as barrons at times. If you want a accurate score prediction just use sparknotes.

Could someone go through questions 5-9 on the 1994 test? I was having trouble with some of them.

Thanks

Sjsharks, thanks so much for sharing. For the NoIDSATII test in your link, how much score did you get? Just trying to get a reference point. Thanks.

What are the products for the following reaction:

MgCO3+H±>???

cps75, i think i got like a 780 or something.

signatureCC, Mg2+ + h20 + co2. Remember carbonic acid is not stable so it will break up into carbon dioxide and water.

But what happens to the H+, and could you explain this question also.

A test tube of carbon dioxide gas is inverted over water, as shown above. The gas becomes more soluble in the water if the:
A) Water is heated
B) Gas is heated
C) Lip of the tube is moved to Level I, the highest level of water
D) Lip of the tube is moved to Level II, a level lower in the water than the test tube
E) Amount of Gas in the tube is reduced

The answer is D, but why?

The test is within five days…what is the best strategy now? Do I have to read the prep book again or just solve as many practice tests as I can and review only parts I seriously lack?

@signatureCC, i need to see the diagram

@mansu007, take more tests.

@signatureCC, D is correct since if you move the tube to a lower level in the water, pressure should increase. Greater pressure -> higher solubility.
Its the same reason why soda is always pressurized when unopened.

@hungryjoe

Thanks for the TT CE strategy :)

So I’ve gotten 78.75,75,75, and 76.25 on the Barron’s practice tests (all 800’s in 40 minutes). What do you think my chances are of getting an 800 on the real thing? Also, for some reason I can’t take the Sparknotes practice tests. I’m logged in but wen I click start test, it just refreshes the page. How do I fix this? (I’m probably going to take the 1994 and 1998 tests later)
