Hello - back again looking at colleges already for #2!! Is anyone familiar with Guilford College in Greensboro North Carolina? We will be visiting in a couple weeks. Thanks!

I had a friend that attended Guilford years ago. Actually she's one of the smartest people I've known. She did her graduate studies at Duke. She always spoke very highly of Guilford. It is a Quaker college I believe, but doesn't shove those things at people. I've looked at it for D, but she wants to attend a larger college.

Son also wants a larger college, but I want him to see it so he could realize that smaller can be a good thing! I had heard very good things about, it as well. Thanks.

You should search this forum as there have been a number of recent discussions, all very positive, about Guilford.

Guilford is, as you know, a small Quaker school located in a wonderful area of Greensboro. ( My parents lived about 1.5 miles from the campus). From the people I know who have attended Guilford, it is a small "gem" of an LAC. If your child is comfortable in a more "liberal" environment, then Guilford may be a great find. By that I mean professors are fairly liberal the school is not a prep-like environment, if you know what I mean.

The campus is gorgeous, safe and kids do well in graduate or professional school admission. Good luck!

Friend of mine is a recent grad, graduated about 4 years ago. Very smart student who could have gone to a better college, but is Quaker and wanted a small college with values supporting nonviolence.

She says that the classes weren't that hard, but she easily could supplement them by using the professors' office hours. The professors were very focused on teaching, and were pleasures to work with.

She told me an interesting story of how her roommate's senior project was living in the nearby woods finding her own food and building her own shelter. Apparently, the college didn't realize all of this, however, until the spring when -- for safety reasons-- they had the girl move back into the dorm. The girl had enough info for her senior project, however.

From what I can tell, it's a very liberal campus in terms of students' being very interested in environmental and social justice issues.

Ah, yes, the Honors Colloquiam on Thoreau. ;)
