OK, being the stand-up guy that I am, I’m blaming this thread on my good friend MikeWozowsi, who sucked me into a discussion a few months ago about cable TV in the dorms. You know I love you, Mike. :)

Yesterday, at the suggestion of the UA housing folks, I called Comcast, the local cable provider, to ask about the cost of upgrading to HD cable. FWIW, the cost is $7.95/month. If you want a DVR to go along with it, the cost is $15.95/month. Anyone who chooses to indulge in this guilty pleasure can pick up the HD and/or DVR boxes from Comcast’s store in Tuscaloosa.

If you have any other guilty college pleasures to share, now is the time to confess. It’s a very cleansing experience. :)

Malanai, there could be 2 things going on here! Clue us in which is the most accurate!

First, you and Mike are contemplating setting up a Mancave complete with all the trappings. Might I be so bold as to suggest a 56" LCD Screen Sony Model Number 453LCD345 (or larger is the suite wall will hold a larger one). If this is the case please let me know which suite it is so I can pass the information onto my son who would gladly partake in the watching of sporting events there with his suitemates.

My second thought, is that you and Mike are very jealous of all the great things our children will be experiencing at Bama and you both have decided to enroll! If this is the case don’t forget to check the other threads on what to wear, the meal plan options, honors courses, …

What exactly is included with the dorm room?

Land line, basic cable, and internet access, right?

Son just bought a small TV for his room with his graduation money. Hoping he won’t have to pay extra for cable. If so, looks like a return will be in order.

He’ll be in Riverside West, if that makes a difference.

Basic cable is included. All students have wireless access for their computers. I do not know anyone who does not use a cell phone on campus, so I don’t know why a land line would be needed.

I think the land line is there so students can fax instructions to their Cayman Island bankers without having to inconvenience themselves. :)

BB, #1 is partially true. A Mancave is decidedly in order. Thanks for the recommendation. However, for reasons I am not at liberty to discuss, I don’t believe a Mancave is in Mike’s repertoire.

Regarding point two, you’re darned right I’m jealous! Can’t speak for my buddy Mike.

Guilty pleasure = Ben and Jerry’s Karamel Sutra, but I digress. D is actually debating if she wants/needs a t.v. in her room fearing it will be too much of a distraction.

Pardon me, I have to run to the store for something from the freezer section. . .

A common room t.v. sounds like the best plan to me. Neither D has a bedroom t.v. at home. Can I just send them over to Malanai’s son’s place? I hear there is a sweet set-up in the works over there.

Remember, there are also TV rooms in many of the res halls. I visited two of them in Ridgecrest South (one on the first floor and one on the second floor (I think).

D is planning on having a TV in her room; she doesn’t have one in her room at home but one of the ways she decompresses is by watching Food Network, the Golf Channel and other non-traditional, large group watching type shows. She plans on going to the Ferg or the TV rooms in the dorms to watch the UA away games. She got money for graduation & that is one of the things she is planning on buying for herself…

^^^
She might want to look at the smaller flat screens that have built-in DVD players. Then you can watch a movie and stop it whenever you want and continue later.

I was not too thrilled when they came home from Best Buy with a TV, but the men in the house overruled. It will probably be used more as a TV aid. I did not have one in college, but frequently crashed in friends’ rooms when a favorite movie was on TV. That’s back in the day when they had those great TV miniseries.

As for land line, I don’t know that we’ll use it, but we do have friends that actually have pay as you go cell phones and will probably make use of the land line if it’s included in the rent.

Speaking of rent, is the land line and basic cable included in the rent, or do you get a fee once you plug either of them in, like some hotels do you?

The TV/DVD player is a good idea, mom.

Who is the basic cable provider so we can look up what channels are provided with basic cable?

truth be told, i would probably prefer the mancave to the spa thingy! : )

my DD will be bringing a tv for her room. likes to watch tv at night when she is going to sleep. she also has a habit of doing homework with the tv on. it has been working for her so far, so who am i to complain.

i would think that kids would have a tv in the common room, but idk.

one of the things my DD is already worried about “missing” is the DVR. we record almost everything we like to watch and then watch it at our convenience.

M2CK: we were looking at one of those combos the other day at Costco, but then figured she could hook her laptop up to the TV & watch the DVDs that way.

Ah, DVRs…whatever did we do without them She’s figuring she can catch what she misses on Hulu OR since we have ATT U-Verse, if we record them, I think she can watch via the internet when she logs into the Uverse portal. (Note to self: check on that!)
