TEACH ME!!

There are some cool finger exercises you could learn that really help.

IMO, the best way to learn is with friends that play. I had a lot of friends that were in bands around town and it was fun to go over and jam with them.

Learn the basic chords like C, D, E, G, A and then learn to make the chord changes between each one.

Power chords are simple....

Learn some scales and practice them; I've got a great finger exercise that I can show you when you learn tabs.

Any websites you would recommend? I don't have any friends that play and I'm too broke to afford lessons so I'll have to teach myself the basics.

I didn't have lessons or any friends to help me start, either. I second granted, as well-- learning chords and switching between the various ones builds dexterity, which you definitely need on guitar! Also, when you start learning those chords and progressions, your fingers may hurt quite a bit and/or bleed (mine did). So don't be too harsh on yourself when you are practicing. Your fingers will eventually form callouses, which make life a LOT better once you have them.

Also, learn good strumming habits, hand-wise and pick-wise. Be relaxed!

Song-wise, the best way to learn is to just pick up the thing and learn as you go. Listen to recordings of that song. Go slowly, and be patient. It's an evil process, but hey, what in life isn't? But learn how to read tabs first, of course. :)

My favorite tab/guitar resource site: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com. I believe there are some guitar tutorials on that website, too... I haven't gone through them carefully, but they seem quite good. Plus, there's an online community there that knows their stuff, so you can ask any guitar questions on there, too.

Good luck!

What kind of guitar is it?
