Gunshots 2am 40th and Walnut

maybe u should try 2 talk to yr son about how u feel. i don’t think u should critize penn b/c they’ve done a massive security job. i think they’re doing great. i used to live on 94th street in nyc, at carnegie park. it’s a great area but i used to hear gun shots at night. i felt completely safe, but obviously i wasn’t going to go out at night. by the same token, when my family lived 2 a safe area of croton-on-hudson, i knew i couldn’t go out at night b/c there were creeps lurking around. it’s a question of being street smart. maybe u could ask yr son to just focus on his senior yr and not go out late partying. there are plenty of ppl who don’t, so it wouldn’t ostracize him or anything like that.

^^ Oh yeah, THAT’s going to happen! (the not going out part). I am not criticizing Penn. I’m saying it’s a concern, which it is.

nychic, these were the regular weeknight hours my son left the library to go home. I don’t know if you’ve started college, but the typical partying college students wouldn’t be going home so early. I used to worry about my son’s safety at those hours but he assured me there were tons of students still on the streets then.

they seriously don’t have dollar menu after 11? how do they make money?

Because we’re already there and craving big macs and fries and apple pies so we buy them anyway. They’ve got us wired. =(

With the $2 menu. Besides, it could be jacked up to a $6 menu before Penn kids might start to notice…

Big Mac meal, diet coke, and a six piece chicken nugget with sweet and sour sauce…mmmmm

I live in the fanciest neighborhood in Philadelphia, and I heard five gunshots a few nights ago at 12:30 am. I called the police. Later, I asked about it and was told that it happens all the time; I just happened to notice it that night. No one has been injured by gunfire in my neighborhood in the past 15 years, at least. They thought it was kids playing around.

I suspect there are lots of places in Nashville where you can sometimes hear gun shots at night, too.

^^ There are. But my kids don’t live at those intersections.

I don’t understand why you allowed your son to attend college in this dangerous neighborhood. Clearly he should be protected from such violence. Is it too late to transfer out?

I live in the suburbs of a large city and never hear gunshots. Nor do I have any interest in adjusting to their sound or being concerned about my children “catching” a stray round. Just my opinion…

“I don’t understand why you allowed your son to attend college in this dangerous neighborhood. Clearly he should be protected from such violence. Is it too late to transfer out?”

Sarcasm? Very helpful.

I didn’t realize you lived in Rittenhouse, JHS. Nice.

theoneo- Are you 12? I grew up in the Philadelphia area. I took classes at Penn. Both my parents and my sister went to Penn. I’m not an idiot. I am also not a fan of the city. It was my son’s college choice and he hasn’t been shot yet. It is my right as a parent to not be thrilled that there are gunshots outside his expensive, new student apartment building.

I’m pretty sure theoneo is joking. Either way MOWC, you shouldn’t have sprung for the Radian. Too dangerous. You should have gotten him a place on the Main Line and had him commute to the war zone that is Penn.

Better bars close to the Radian.

^he has his priorities right. he’ll make a great lawyer one day.

what’s life without a little DANGER

REAL ISSUE HERE: This happened when school was not in session. When school IS in session there are tons of Penn kids walking everywhere at ALL times of the night. That alone creates a safer environment than anything else. People don’t open fire in crowded areas. 2am during a summer, non-summer-session night is nothing to worry about. If this had happened at that location during the year though, it might be a little startling.

Chill guys, MomofWC is right after all  . Having gone to Main Line bars and Philly bars, I can say Philly bars win.

Like her son, I am also among the lucky few Penn students (99.9999%) who hasn’t been shot

Penn kids dont get shot, but they do get attacked with screwdrivers.
