Hello! I am a senior in high school in Minnesota and I am currently on my college search! My top choices have been narrowed down to Gustavus Adolphus College and Univeristy of Minesota- Morris. I got a 27 on my ACTs and have higher than a 4.0 weighted GPA. I am a full IB diploma candidate.

My extacurriculars include:

Spanish club
National honors society (VP)
Link Crew (Commissioner/officer)-help freshmen get used to high school
Volunteer at a nursing home
Volunteer at an animal rescue
Volunteer for city on the human rights/human services commission
Band

Does anyone have any info or experience with any of these colleges? What is the overall vibe of each? Which college would you choose? Also, from the info I included do you think I would be able to get into these colleges? Thanks so much!

I would say you are a very good candidate for both of these schools. Gustavus has a pretty strong “Lutheran” vibe, but if you are okay with that it is a very nice school. I have been to some family sports camps there and really liked it. Morris also has a good reputation.

Do you know what you want to major in? Have you run the net price calculator for both schools to see what the costs are? Have you done a visit for a tour and maybe to sit in on a class?

You certainly don’t have to decide now. There is nothing wrong with keeping an open mind while applying to both. If you get in and they have an opportunity for accepted students to visit, go see both for an overnight and a couple of days on campus. You don’t have to decide anything until the end of April next year. :)

I would prefer more of a liberal vibe. A Lutheran school is ok though. I would like to double major in political science and environmental studies. I have visited both campuses. I liked them both. The cost for Morris is definitely a plus. Although, Gustavus is doable. What school would you think is more highly regarded by graduate schools? Thanks for the info!!

You have two great choices in front of you. Both have the small town vibe of a small campus and are amazing academically. As for political science programs UMM is fairly impressive. I know off the top of my head that the mayor of Lakeville as well as a state supreme court justice went through the program as undergrads at Morris. Finally as someone who has a lot of student loan debt still six years out of school I would way cost very heavily and do every scholarship app you can get your hands on. With your credentials you would be a strong candidate for most.
*disclaimer that I attended UMM before grad school and regard it as the most beneficial decision of my life thus far.

If you want Lutheran-Liberal, try St Olaf. Your stats are a bit on the low side but they’re very international-minded so your IB would definitively help, and your ECs lean toward ‘service’ which they appreciate a lot too.
Otherwise I’d pick Morris, especially if you plan to go to UMN in the Twin Cities afterwards.
