I don't see a lot of discussion on this forum, but I thought I'd post anyway.

My S, a current Junior, is seriously looking at Sarah Lawrence. I don't know a lot about this school except that back in the 80's, I had a roommate at my public U who had attended SLC for a year, hated it, (thus becoming my roommate). Yeah, this was 20+ years ago and I would have thought she was a good fit...apparently not.

Question is: how comfortable is it for (probably straight, possibly iffy) guys? He wants to major in Creative Writing and he is attracted to the open curriculum and closeness to NYC.

My S is 1st year @ SLC. He is straight and enjoys his social life a lot. Although he picked SLC due to the closeness to NYC, he appears to party on campus almost every weekend. I do not think he has been into the city ten times since August. My son is a theatre person and he wasn't seeking a frat/sports/poker/male bonding experience. What he has found is lots of cool male and female friends who are freshmen, sophmores, juniors and even seniors.

Thanks, lantern5. I've finally gotten the younger sibling to show some interest in colleges (his older sister is in the whole application process right now), and this is one he actually requested more information from.

My S is also not the frat/sports type...rare, it seems. He's a pretty solid student and a great test taker, but I understand they no longer take the SAT scores into consideration. I just hope if he decides to apply here, he'll shine enough in his essays/writing to stand out, since he's not particularly EC oriented. Really, a "hears a different drummer" type, and I know these kids have a place somewhere.

Thanks again. Funny, my one SLC person (only went for a year) hated it, did her BA at a public UC, and then went back to NYC for Parsons. You just can't presuppose!

My S was also a great test taker, which did not help him at SLC at all. I urge you to visit, more than once if possible (including an overnight) and to start work on their application early. They go beyond the common app in requiring written responses from prospective students.

Hello,
My son chose SLC ED because he didn't want to choose at a conservatory-type school between acting and writing, both of which he enjoys. From what I hear, there's plenty of both straight and not straight guys. All are hopefully smart, quirky, and interesting.

Thanks for the good feedback! My S is definitely smart, quirky, and interesting! I'm just hoping SLC has some good finaid, since the price tag seems pretty hefty!

We'd love to visit at some point, but since we're on the completely opposite coast, he'd have to combine it with a couple other choices to make it economically feasible for us to go to NY. Right now he's also liking U of Rochester and Hamilton, but they're not exactly a hop, skip and a jump away. I'm telling him now to save his well-graded expository English papers as he'd have to submit them with his supplemental app for both SLC and Hamilton, if I read correctly.
