Hey everyone! I was just wondering how prestigious the Honors Program is at GW. One of my biggest fears about attending GWU is living in the shadow of Georgetown, and so I wasn't sure if the Honors Program was of the same ilk of Georgetown or just a fancy--but insubstantial--way of luring in top-notch students to GWU. Furthermore, how do the students living on the Vern compare with those on the Foggy Bottom campus? I'm a bit weary to opt for Honors housing as I fear not having a social life and that the Honors kids will be stereotypical 'nerds' and will be quoting obscure sci-fi books all the time. I'm not saying I'm a huge partier or anything, but I like having some fun. Thanks so much!

wow. gw probably isn’t right for you. go to georgetown.

Actually, GWAlum07, I didn’t even apply to Georgetown because I liked the feel of GW better. I just know that GW is often considered–not by me, but by many–to be second-tier to Georgetown or to stand for ‘Georgetown Waitlist.’ I just want to make sure that I’m making the right choice in my college decision as I don’t want to be considered a lesser student when applying for internships not specifically advertised to GW students on GWork or the UHP blog, or when applying to post-graduate programs and such.

GW is still well-regarded in DC and nationally, I know lots of people here with prestigious internships. I understand your concern though, but as a GW student I’ve never felt second-rate to Gtown students or as if I had less opportunities than them.

Why would you ask these obnoxious questions here? There are at least 3 insulting comments toward GW students in your post.

I’m with GWAlum07. You’d be happier elsewhere. Maybe you’ll get off the waitlist at Barnard.

I didn’t mean to be condescending at all. I re-read my thread starter and I can see now how it can be perceived that way, but I didn’t mean it that way at all, so I apologize. I’m just trying to get the full picture of what being a student in the Honors Program is really like and to see if it is a place where I will belong and flourish academically, socially, career opportunity-wise, etc. etc. And thank you to sarah9 for actually answering my question instead of criticizing.

i can see what you mean. it’s a bit annoying when people think you go to georgetown rather than gw because of georgetown’s fame in DC. and sure a lot of people consider georgetown to be better than gw due to rankings and all. but i’ve learned to deal with that because in the end, i know that many gw kids are just as smart as georgetown kids. there are many qualified kids who are rejected from gtown but are accepted to gwu, vice versa. that doesn’t make them any less smart though! i think that unless you’re going into business, only your gpa and experience really matters, not the school. i don’t have as much gw pride as schmohawk and GWAlum, but i do know that there’s no shame in going to gw even when the world thinks gtown is better.
also, i think that gw kids actually have more access to internships etc because we have our own metro and we’re near the center of everything. gtown’s main disadvantage is their transportation. they have no metro stop and are located on a hill. their only method of transportation is through buses.

there is no difference between fobby bottom and vern kids! ppl stereotype vern kids as quiet and hermits and no lifes. but seriously that’s not the case at all. there are some vern kids who really love to party, and some that are a bit more reserved. those that want to party can just go to foggy bottom. you will not be considered a nerd for being in the honors program and doing honors housing. honors kids take honors classes with honors kids as well as regular classes with non honors kids. so there’s a balance there.

Also, keep in mind that most of the “nerds” you encounter will probably be political nerds, not really sci-fi nerds.

Gaagghhahhhh!

I realized I wrote “fobby” instead of foggy bottom LOL.

Thank you so much for all of your input! I’m about 95% sure that I’ll be making a deposit to GW later today. Just a quick question, and it may be a toughie: what is the worst thing about the Honors Program or one thing that you would change about it? Thanks so much again!
