[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I honestly don’t know… I didn’t interview (which I was worried would hurt me) or show any interest. In the end it was probably because my stats fit into the average and my essay was unique. [] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at a camp for kids with special needs the summer before junior year. Tutored math and Russian for a year.
[] Summer Activities: The aforementioned camp and two classes at community college the summer before senior year (Macroeconomics and Sociology).
[] Essays: They were good, but probably not great. I’m a strong writer, but not really fabulous by any means. I really harped on my Russian heritage and the importance of a multinational community and a multidisciplinary education in my “Why GW” essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both of the teachers I asked have known me for years (3 and 6), and I’m fairly close with them. I assume they were nice. Notably, they both teach in the same department, and I was definitely warned against asking both of them. It really felt right for them to be the ones to write my recs, though, so I went ahead with asking them anyway.
[] Counselor Rec: My high school is huge and I don’t really know my guidance counselor, so I’m not sure. I’m sure it was good, but it couldn’t be really personal.

[] Strengths: scores, probably recommendations as well.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to really emphasize the impact my Russian heritage has had on my life, as well as the tutoring I did and how much I enjoy teaching.
[] Weaknesses: My grades. I had almost all B’s junior year and one C+ (pre-calc). Very happy things turned out well, though! I also never once visited campus or attended a GW admissions event, so I definitely didn’t show the interest I should have.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not entirely sure haha. I think my love of foreign languages really came through (most of my activities and awards had to do with those…). Perhaps that love made the committee look upon me more favorably? Not sure.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Fordham, Northeastern, UMass, UConn, American. Waitlisted at Smith. Rejected from UNC:CH. Waiting on BU.
