GW senior taking questions

downtoearth: GW is the only school I’ve been to, so I can’t say what it’s like compared to other schools. Frankly, yes, the bureaucracy here kind of sucks. It’s improved; they now have Colonial Central in the basement of the Marvin Center, which is nice because it put Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and the Registrar all in one place. But there’s still lots of paperwork you have to do to get simple things done, and if you are involved in scheduling/getting funding for student orgs, it’s even worse.

However, I wouldn’t not come to GW because of this. It is frustrating when you need to get something done, but it doesn’t interfere with your day-to-day life as a student.

maybe it’s because im not used to having so much freedom in course registration
but i was looking at First Class and apparently the only requirement for freshmen is UW20? is that true? and we can actually choose if we want to take it fall or spring semester?

if so…then what exactly do students take first semester o.O?

and also, jsut to make sure…if you get a 4-5 on the AP Calc exam then does that mean the credits you get can waive a specific math course? which means you don’t have to take it and it’ll still satisfy GCRs right?

im in CCAS/SMPA btw…if that helps.

and First Class is seriously confusing =(

GWSENIOR–does high school transcript still send to admission office?

AND Thank you sooooo much for answering questions!!! GOOD LUCK in LAw School!! :)

Peppermint-I posted under SAT II w3aiver and relied upon a statement from the First Class requirement section. But I also talked to an advisor, Annie Vinik who told me that I should be eligible for certain waivers and credits, but that I had to wait to confirm at CI. I looked at the math department and they said that if you got more than 560 on yoru SAT II that you could get a waiver and if you scored a 4-5 on calc you could get credit. I don’t understand who the authority is that determines if you get the credits or waivers though. I totally agree, very frustrating and confusing and no one who will give a definitive answer!

peppermint: Yep, you’re in college now- you pick what classes you want! UW is the only required one for ALL freshmen. There may be others, depending on your major (for instance, Elliot students have to take a certain intro course freshman year). As for other classes, you want to start tackling your requirements for CCAS (listed in First Class- 3 sciences, 2 maths, etc.). If you know what you might want to major in, you should probably take an intro class in your major as well.
Make sure to check banweb before you register- a lot of classes will be closed, and you need to have lots of alternatives available in case you can’t get into the ones you want.

daily: Your school needs to send your final high school transcript to the admissions office.

waves: These links should help:
SAT IIs- they confirmed my suspicion that they only grant waivers, not credit, for SAT II scores: [Colonial Inauguration 2009](http://gwired.gwu.edu/ci/academicsnew/SATII)
APs: they do grant credit: [Colonial Inauguration 2009](http://gwired.gwu.edu/ci/academicsnew/collegecredit/AP/)

GWsenior - as always, thank you!!! We’re going to miss you!

Thank-you GW senior best wishes for law school.

GWSenior thanks for answering my questions and I have one last one…Is CLEP accepted? at least for math??

homeschool: Yes, CLEP is accepted. Here is the chart: [Colonial Inauguration 2009](http://gwired.gwu.edu/ci/academicsnew/collegecredit/CLEP/)

THANKS GWSenior! :D

one moree (hopefully the last question):
Is is true that Dean’s Seminars are meant to be more challenging and writing intensive? If so then is it better to take UW20 and Dean’s Seminar in different semesters?

Hello, I am planning on attending George Washington University. I was recently accepted as a transfer student. Within the next few days I should be sending out my letter of intent. I still have a lot of questions regarding this university though. Please, if anyone can, give me some information about the topics that I am concerned with.

I am mainly concerned with dorms. I did not dorm at my previous college, so I am relatively new to the experience of applying for housing. How and when should I begin the process of applying for housing? I know that in some universities dorms run out, particularly for third and fourth year students. Does this occur at George Washington? If so, should I hurry with the housing application process?

From what I understand, the main campus is Foggy Bottom. Is there any chance that I may not be placed at that campus as a transfer student entering my junior year, and am I correct in assuming that all of my courses will take place at Foggy Bottom? Are all the third and fourth year dorms located at Foggy Bottom?

Assuming that I will be eligible for the third and fourth year dorms, which are the best? From my research, City Hall, Ivory Tower and 1959 E Street seem like the best ones, and I am not sure about 2135 F street which is apparently supposed to open this fall. Are we allowed to pick which residence hall we wish to live in, out of the third and forth year dorms, and if so how quickly do they run out of space? I have heard that many universities allow students to state other students with who they would prefer to dorm, but that they rarely fulfill those requests. Does George Washington University allow these requests and if so, how responsive are they towards them?

Thanks

peppermintdeluxe: S took both a Dean’s seminar and UW20 in the same semester & had no trouble with it. Don’t know if it mattered, but he came from a HS where they did alot of writing.

pepper: The dean’s seminars vary in difficulty. I’ve heard of some easy ones and some really hard ones (actually, same with UW, though that class guarantees that you’ll have at least 3 papers). Check ratemyprofessors.com for some insight as to whether you could manage the two courses you are considering.

G89: You should discuss your housing concerns with the Housing Office. The upperclass dorms do fill up quickly- some upperclassmen who requested on-campus housing are put on a waitlist. You definitely won’t get the new dorm because those spots filled up first. If you do get a spot in a dorm though, it will be on Foggy Bottom. Classes are offered on both Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon; if you don’t want to take classes on the Vern, don’t register for a section that has an “M” in front of it.

what are the breakfast options on or around campus?

how about late night food options when studying? (like after 9 or 10pm)

breakfast: J Street (in the Marvin Center) opens at 7:30 I think (weekdays only). Au Bon Pain is probably the most popular option. My personal favorite though is the GW Deli on the corner of 22nd and G- GREAT breakfast sandwiches! If you are talking about weekend breakfast/brunch places, wander up to DuPont Circle for a bunch of great options.

late night: Sadly GW is kind of lacking in late-night options directly on campus. The Gelman Starbucks is open 24 hrs., and Pita Pit in the basement of Ivory Tower is open till like 2 AM. I think there are a couple of places that will deliver late at night too.

Does anyone know whats up with transfer decisions? I applied on time (April 1) and I have been waiting a very long time to hear a decision. I call the admissions office every week and they say they are “working on it”…the other colleges that I applied to gave me prompt decisions between a month and 2 months ago. GW is my number 1 choice though!

BTW, is it true that there is no all-you-can eat cafeteria at GWU? If there is an all-you-can eat cafeteria, where are they located?

clarix: I don’t know anything about transfer decisions, sorry. But yes it is true that there is no all-you-can-eat cafeteria; a couple of times a month they will have all-you-can eat specials (plus the Vern all-you-can-eat brunch on Sundays), but otherwise you use your GWorld card to pay for whatever you get. The closest thing to a cafeteria we have is J Street Cafe, which is pay-by-the-pound. I actually liked that there was no unlimited cafeteria- I think it helps to keep away the freshman 15!

I have a couple questions about class registration. Do classes ever open up after they have closed? Do people drop a class over the summer? Are there waitlists for classes? If not, is there any chance of getting into a closed class?
Thanks for the help.

GWsenior-is there any places in GW or DC could store bags for early arrived students?

Thanks!
