can almost guarantee that you will receive some sort of financial aid.

Be careful with such generalizations. A neighbor was accepted two years ago and offered a financial aid package that was 100% loans with a low EFC.

What do you think my chances for admission/scholarships are for GW?

I plan on majoring in Middle eastern studies and I have a south asian/middle eastern background.

ACT
English 34
Math 30
Reading 33
Science 29

GPA-4.2 weighted
AP US
AP GOVERNMENT
AP EURO
AP CALC
AP BIO
AP STAT
AP Literature

my class rank isnt computed yet but its probably in top 8-12 out of 210

I am president of student government and vp of county student government
Also i am president of the NHS, chess club, and i started the multicultural club at my school. I played football all 4 years and track the last 2 years.
I placed first in the state in FBLA buisness ethics
I have over 150 hours of community service along with 30 hours overseas during an earthquake

what do you think my chances are for scholarships/admission?

mouzia57: I'm no admissions officer, so really I can only base my assessment of your chances on anecdotal stuff from people I know. But it seems to me that you have an excellent shot at admission- my grades and ACTs were much lower than yours, and I know people who have gotten in with stats much lower than mine, haha. I'm guessing since your stats are far above GW's averages that you'd have a great shot at scholarship money, but I really can't tell you for sure. Apply and see what you get! :)

My D got deferred. Can anybody explain what it means? It's getting close to send deposits to colleges. If she won't be admitted to GW we would rather send a deposit to the school she got admitted.

I have just been accepted (so excited) and I too am going to be majoring Political Science at CCAS. I was wondering if you could devulge on your future plans, what GW opened up to you in terms of your major, and some highlights of the program.

Congratulations on your acceptance! Next year I will be attending law school (at a top 10 institution).

I had some great, great political science professors. I'm not going to lie and say every professor is fantastic (I have had a few bad ones), but if you choose your classes carefully and take things you are interested in, you will almost without a doubt get a great academic experience.

The biggest advantage of going to GW, however, is not the classes themselves. It's about what you make of being in DC. On campus, student organizations are constantly hosting very influential speakers. In my time here, I've stood on stage with Hillary Clinton, chatted with Howard Dean, hugged James Carville, and met/listened to lectures from countless Congressmen and other influential political figures. Additionally, I've worked at the Department of Justice for the past 2 years, which was really helpful in preparation for law school.

GW will give you a very solid academic experience, but part of the reason that you were accepted was because the school thinks you will take advantage of the resources in DC. Talk to your professors; see what connections they have. Go to lectures and events on campus and around the city. I hate to be cliche, but if you work hard, the doors will open up for whatever you want to do :)

Let me know if you have any more specific questions!

May I ask you what you will concentrate on after law school? I am interested into getting into legislative politics and I wonder if a law degree is eventually in my future.

Also, do you know anything about the 5 year Poli Sci B.S./Master of Public Policy program?

I got in to its business school today. Honestly I would love to go there but money is kinda the problem. I am sure I can afford it but it's just way too much expensive..

I don't know if i will get academic scholarships.. i mean.. how do all the kids afford to go to the school?

i got into biz school too.. not sure about its academic standing. i know that DC is wonderful place.. but i can't find more information about the biz school on GWU's website. no details on the course or syllabus or stuff. could u enlighten me on the status of the biz school in GWU?

jb12...did you mean waitlisted? If so, and she really wants to attend GW, she should have contact with admissions and ask this very question that you pose. Writing a letter to show why GW is her first choice and what she will get out of the experience would probably be helpful.

GW is one of my top choices, but Im having a really hard time comparing their program to other school because the business school website (for lack of a better word) sucks. If anyone knows where I can get curriculum info major and concentration requirements, class info, electives, internship info...stuff like that it'd be much appreciated. Also if anyone knows someone in the business school or is in the business school and can offer up some insights into the program i'd really appreciate it. I'm looking into international business.

colls- I am going into public interest law. If you have a desire to do legislative stuff, a JD could be in your future, but I think it's more important to get work experience first. If you have any desire to work on the hill later, you pretty much have to work as an unpaid intern first (and it's easiest to do this during your undergrad at GW!). If you're interested more in lobbying and that sort of thing, there are tons and tons of internships at firms that will give you a better idea of what you need to do for a career in that field.

To all those wondering about the business school- here is a link to the courses offered: GW Bulletin 2008-2009

I'm not a business major, but I know a lot of people who are. They tell me that the business school is very, very structured- there are a lot of classes that you HAVE to take in a particular order. There is also a big focus on group projects. I have no idea what the prestige of the program is, though.

I misunderstood my D. She was waitlisted. Hopefully she'll talk to admissions today or any time soon. I'll have her writing a letter to admission office as well. Hope it'll help but I doubt there is not much time left.

Thanks for doing all of this for us! I (and I'm sure the rest of us) appreciate it.

I was accepted to the Elliot School, and I was just wondering if the internship oppurtunities are really as vast as people say they are.

Also, I know the dorms are wonderful, but half of me feels like it attracts a bunch of snobs. Obviously you'll get them at any school, but do you think that there are a disproportionate amount of them at GW?

Yes, the internship opportunities really are as great as everyone says. I get at least 4-5 emails per day from the Political Science adviser about new internships. Then there are all the jobs/internships listed on the online career database (GWork), ones you find at career center fairs, ones that your professor/friend tells you about...really, the opportunities are endless.

GW does have its fair share of snobs, which turned me off about the school at first. But really, if you get involved in things you like, you will meet cool people no problem. And I don't think the people are any more snobby than they are at most "top-tier" schools- they all attract some spoiled kids that haven't gotten a taste of the real world yet. It gets better after freshman year, too.

i saw youre a political science major, but do you know how strong gw's engineering school is? some i have talked to said SEAS isnt as strong as other universities with engineering programs, but i got in and liked gw. are these rumors true? (please be honest)

does gw offer academic scholarships to students after the freshman year? i heard that if you're offered a scholarship in freshman year you're required to maintain a certain GPA, etc. So can people who do well in the 1st year apply for these scholarships and have it in the 2nd year? (hope this doesnt sound confusing)

also, can we apply for fin aid after our first year if we didnt apply for it (missed the deadline)?
