Both GW and BU gave me $40,000 in scholarships, so I'm trying to decide between the two. I've been reading online, and there's a lot of criticism about both schools (e.g. all GW kids are snobs, at BU you're just a number). I wondered if people could give me some advice on which school I should pick. GW has been my #2 choice for a while (I was rejected by my first pick, Brown), but I'm concerned about not fitting in. I'm not wealthy by any means, and I'm the artsy type. I don't drink, party, etc., just because it's not really my thing. I'm more of the quiet, intellectual type. I plan on studying Spanish, and I hope to work in the translation field.

My sister goes to American, and I think she's happy there. I got in there too, but it didn't offer me nearly as much money. (I also don't really want to go to the same school as my sister.) I love the city of D.C.; it's GW about which I have reservations.

I apologize if there are grammar mistakes. It's 2:30 in the morning.

sisu92: So sorry about Brown I find your concerns aboout GW to be natural and expected from high school seniors. I’m with you in a lot of the things you mentioned about your character. Have you visited GW? If so, did you think the kids were snobby? I find it hard to think of such a large student body to fit one group. Same thing goes with BU. I’m glad that FA is not an issue for you and to me, it seems that location preference is pulling you towards GW. So if you haven’t visited either school, do so as soon as you can. It will drastically change your perspective.

@sisu92: I’m working on the same decision right now, but I’m 99% sure I’ll go to GW. There are so many incredible opportunities in DC, everyone you meet is networking! And just think of the weather :)

Good Luck, although I’m sure you’ll do well wherever you go!

To be honest, I would have a hard time recommending GW for you. Firstly, the school is not an intellectual school at all - it is a career school. That is to say, the main concerns of students and faculty are how each class, assignment, and opportunity are going to get you an internship or job. Yes, there is great networking and great internship opportunities, but this is by NO means a liberal arts setting. For someone who considers themselves artsy, you should know that the art department is considered a “joke” and the Spanish department is severely lacking. Nothing could underscore this better than my Spanish Lit (400-level) professor telling me to transfer if I want to seriously pursue languages and the liberal arts. GW students, overwhelmingly, are interested in climbing the social and career ladders; they are not so much interested in intellectual exploration for its own sake. Be sure to visit before enrolling. Of course, you can make the experience as good as you are willing to, and with a $40,000 grant, it would be hard to turn down. Good luck!

GW is better for the career minded, not for te ones who are still trying to discover what they like. I kind of agree with Gonefishing.
If you know what you want, gW is there. otherwise it is a darn expensive school to find yourself. BU has more of a range in that aspect. So really it’s up to you. Good luck in your admission to both schools!

I also made that decision (Among BU, Tufts, NYU, and GW) and chose GW. I knew I wanted a big, East Coast City. I chose GW after a last round of visits- I liked the campus -within-a city, lacking at BU and NYU, the excellent courses in my major (Media and Public Affairs) the honors program and Presidential Scholarship, the slightly nicer climate, which is very nice, and the the dorms. I like the people here. and the Greek life and the rigor of the program , which is a rigorous as you choose to make it. Where else can you play kickball on the National Mall? Walk to the White House? The opportunities are great.

Do you have any statistics to provide us the tuition of the undergraduate program? The tuition cost for GWU is about 52k, which is around BC and less expensive than NYU.

GWU does not increase its tuition from year to year. My D is in the honors program and works hard focuses on learning. and is very intellectual. very engaged in her area of study. loves DC and is happy. She is in Eliot.

I have the same issue: GWU vs BU. I got admitted to the CAS in both of them. My major must be Math related as far as I’m a sponsored student in my country. Does anybody know where Math deparment is stronger?
