Romeonachos: hmm usually they’ll send out a rejection letter to the rejected applicants… i feel like they’re still deciding?

solarstorm92: me too! whether i make it our not, i just wanna know already!!

so i’m thinking about aborting this app since it’s agriculturally related and i have no intention or interest in agriculturally research at all…maybe i should just email professors instead… um… advices?

@nayhayyy Where do you live? That makes a difference for the advice I give you

And also what type of internship you’re interested in…

@nayhayy I feel as though you should wait and see if you get accepted or not, and then decide. It’s just a few more days until we should get our replies. Plus, depending on the research project, the things you do may not be related to agriculture, and even if they are, I don’t think it’s like you’re going to actually go out and plow the fields or feed pigs or cows or whatever they have in Iowa. So, I don’t think you should make your decision because the field is labeled as “agriculture”.

Kch674: i live in California, so i probably won’t get accepted because i heard the privilege is given to local iowa students…and i’m interested in cancer immunology research regarding surface proteins as of now…but molecular bio in general… btw can i ask which mentor you applied and which one you ended up getting?

Solarstorm92: hmm that is true, because kch674 got a different mentor than the one he applied for … i applied for researches related to HIV and DNA…but if i don’t get accepted into those, i’m really not interested in research around corns or swine feces… well i guess i’ll wait for the result hehe

I’m almost positive that I selected the HIV researcher as my first choice. However, I ended up with a mentor in the department of agronomy who works with statistics and crop scientists. He wasn’t even on the list of possible mentors. I believe they matched me with him because I said in my first short response that I plan to major in bio and minor in math.

As for not getting accepted because of your residence, that isn’t entirely true. I’m from New Jersey.

Regarding research for this summer, I would suggest that you not be too picky. I’m looking to go into molecular bio, but I ended up with an internship dealing with agronomy. My point is that at this stage of the game, any internship at all is going to be difficult to secure, and you are therefore going to have to settle. I highly doubt that any professors are going to take you as an intern just from receiving an unsolicited email from a high school student (you are in high school, yes?). If you would like, there are other science-related internships that are still available. They are not biology specific, and much less related to cancer or immunology. I nevertheless applied because I figured I wanted something. Let me know if these prospects interest you and I will can send/post information.

^yes, please post.

ahahaha i forgot what i put down. I know I put down the bio-oils. I seriously have no recollection of the others though. I said I wanted to become a bioinformatician so hopefully they have a mentor for that? IDK… I’m almost ready to give up but then I won’t fare so well in science competitions without a mentor. Learned that the hard way this year >.<

kch674: yes yes yes i am very interested in them

what happened to you is a perfect case of what i don’t want to happen to me… oh man… if that happens to me and i have to work with crops and doing something way unrelated to my interest, i might as well stay home and study for the SAT and next year’s APs and have some fun with friends

There may be others, but these are the ones I applied to, because I was eligible for them.

In New Mexico/California, Sandia National Laboratory
You may find something more bio-related, or you may get other science-related research
It tells you to search SIP, but it’s better to search “HS” for high school.

In various parts of the country, mostly Virginia and Massachusetts, MITRE
These are IT internships only.
<a href=“Error message”>Error message;

For those in NYC or immediately in the NY metro area:
internships of several kinds with NYC parks & recreation. There isn’t much lab work for the science people, but definitely some horticulture field work and data analytics available.
[Internships at Parks : NYC Parks](Internships at Parks : NYC Parks)

In Houston, Hewlett-Packard:
IT/analyst internship for high school students
https://hp.taleo.net/careersection/2/jobdetail.ftl?job=1118278&lang=en&src=JB-10520

It seems like these are not very suited to your interests, but you can give them a look anyway. I applied to the NYC one and received a reply (an internship offer also), within a week. Note that the NYC parks & recreation internship is also unpaid.

Has anybody other than kch674 gotten a reply yet?

Nothing here.

Ahahaha, don’t live close enough to be able to go to them. And my parents don’t trust me to go somewhere with no adult supervision aka that I’m “immature”

I didn’t get a reply yet.

Haha I just want a science related internship! :)

As far as the new mentors, I rechecked the website and it seems that they’ve added new mentors. It also looks like applications are still open? I’m confused about that.

Crossing my fingers for all of you guys! Hopefully it all works out.

I still have not heard anything from the program! It is driving me insane! I need to know what I’m doing this summer!

@Hadensmiley exactly! I want it to be super busy. :P

So far plans are a HOBY conference, ASB camp, and a confirmation retreat. The rest is for fun.

I was told April 15th first by Curbelo. That didn’t happen, so I asked again and was told the next week. Well, that has passed as well. I told him I didn’t want to seem pushy, but I asked again. This iternship may affect my decision to attend the Texas Academy of Math and Science! Oh! the perils of may!

I called the program coordinator today and they said tommrow is the latest they would email out responses.

responses for acceptances only or for both decisions?

I called too, and she said all responses, I think. But she also added a ‘hopefully’ in there… She said something like, “We should mail out all of the responses by tomorrow, hopefully.” and I was like, “Hopefully? um. Ok. Thanks.”

Has anyone heard anything today??? So frustrating ! I hope the email doesn’t go to SPAM!
