if i don't get into a first-choice (Duke or Columbia) which i probably won't, i will also be applying to GWU. Just want to make sure I'll probably get in. So basically... is GWU a match/safety for me?

GPA: 3.7W, 3.4UW
ACT: 32
SAT2's: MathIIC: 800, Chemistry:700
Class Rank: Top 25%

Jazz Band - lots of awards, leadership, etc.

Varsity Debate Team- lots of awards, always place at tournaments, looking 2 make nationals next year.

You look like a solid applicant. You might want to look into raising your class rank. How many honors/APs are you taking? The gpa looks nice, but if you're not taking APs or honors, it wont' be looking nice.

Level of interest is important. Find ways of displaying your interest in GW by touring, interviewing, and staying in constant contact with the admissions office. Be sincere and personal about your interest in your essay. Go beyond "GW is my number one." I'm sure they hear that line a lot.

Let me know if you have more questions.

I think GW is a match for you, not a safety. I think you should find one or 2 good safeties.

I think your scores are really good, but you should try to raise your grades and rank. Take a challenging course load senior year (APs and honors). Good academic stuff will help you get a scholarship (I got 1/2 tuition like many others on this forum have).

Getting awards is good (something to put on your resume). Take an interview and like GWCurrentStudent said, show interest.

For a very safe safety school, you might try applying to a state school like University of MD College Park, which is good according to US News (#55 I think in the country). Are you a junior? If you are, Good Luck with the application process :) !!

I was wondering why you think U/MD is a safe-safety school. For out of staters, it's not a slam dunk. Am I wrong?

Thanks for your responses! sorry i wasn't clear at all. I'm taking the most rigorous courses available.
9th:
Biology, Honors Geometry, Honors Language arts, Spanish 1, P.E (required), Honors US History, Symphonic Band (NO AP's available to freshman)
10th:
AP Euro History, Honors Algebra 2, Language Arts (regular), Spanish 2, ASR (science research course), chemistry, symphonic band
11th:
AP Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, AP Psychology, ASR 2, AP Government, AP Literature.
12th:
AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP US History, ASR 3, AP English Language, AP Economics, AP Computer Science.

The most rigorous at my school. Could not take higher levels of math because you MUST go in order. I have a choice between AP Calc and AP Stat for senior year, in case you're wondering. (I like stats more than calc)

My GPA is hurt alot by the fact that I got a C both semesters 10th grade in Honors Alg 2, a C+ in pre calc 1st semester jr year (it's now a B+), and a D+ first semester jr year in AP Chem (OUCH!, but it's now a B!!)

So basically I took only 1 non-required, REGULAR class in highschool (10th grade LA) and all others were honors, AP, or required (PE and Spanish) or had no honors (Band)

jgsmith1 -I just gave UMD as an example. It was my 'safe' safety school because I live in MD. Their average scores and grades were lower than other universities I applied too and my own. I got into Gemstone and Honors. For everyone else, their state school should be easier to get into than private schools like GW. It just happens that my state public university is also in the top hundred in the country. There are other good public universities that are fairly easy to get into with good credentials...I don't know if it is easy for an out of state student because I did not apply to an out of state public university.
Hope that clarifies what I said before :)!!

It's good to see that you're taking the most rigorous course work your school offers. Great job pulling up your grade from a D to a B. It shows that you're dedicated and hard-working. Again, taking the most rigorous coursework is something that GW looks for. The C's will give you a little trouble, but as long as you're pulling your math grades, you should be fine. But don't take my work, I'm not an admissions director.

thanks for your advice.
I'm visiting vanderbilt in about a week. any info on the competitiveness there versus here? (At GWU)

I, frankly, don't know a lot about vanderbilt other than it's in the south. Sorry, can't really help you.

Vanderbilt is a really great school. The campus is pretty, and the academics are very strong. They are known to have a bit of grade deflation though.

In terms of competition, Vandy is way more competitive than GWU. Your GPA would be considered low for Vandy, as would your ACT. I don’t know about your SAT’s, but for Vandy, a 2200+ would be considered competitive. A girl from my high school last year was waitlisted with around a 2100.

GW is very unpredictable RD. Are you stats in their range? Yes, but take a look at the 2010 RD page- people with better were waitlisted, people with less were admitted. Definitely not a sure thing.

BTW, it’s too late to interview.
