GWU reputation

i am considering applying to gwu for law school. i am interested in the reputation of gwu as a whole. how does gwu deal with having a superior institution, georgetown, down the street. does georgetown have first dibs on everythign in the DC area? The law school is ranked fairly high, but still a tad below georgetown.

any GWUers that are familar with this issue? I see a lot of hits, but no replies.

This forum is frequented by undgrads (and parents). You should post this on the Law School forum of CC. You'll get people who are a little more knowledge about that part of the university.

Georgetown law is #14 and GW is #20. That's a sizeable difference in ranking, but not as huge as you might think. I am a GW undergraduate, but haven't had trouble getting internships. There's tons of opportunities all over the city, and students at GW, Georgetown, Maryland, Catholic, and Howard share great opportunities. Colleges all over the country share the same city, like USC and UCLA, NYU and Columbia, and Harvard and BC.

GWU is clearly the 2nd best university in the DC area. Does it share the city, Wash. DC, in the same way, fairly, that UCLA and USC do or Northwestern and Chicago do. Or is it lobsided like Harvard and BU or UPenn and Temple.

That's a very subjective question, but in my opinion, it fairly equally shares internships with Georgetown. Remember GW is twice GT's size.

GW probably has more alumni in the area too. Though both schools may play second fiddle to the University of Maryland in a lot of ways.

Do a Lexus Nexus search and see what school name pops up the most in the local media. I wouldn't be surprised if it was GW outside the sports pages. Its more central location, Lisner Auditorium events, its hospital, and a few very public professors and the fact that CNN's CrossFire originates on campus tends to keep it in the news, especially locally.

Just speaking as a GW alumus myself we may not have great attachment to the school but we certainly don't suffer Tufts Syndrome or Ivy envy when we think of Georgetown. In fact most of us just think of Georgetown as a bunch of preppy wankers who are Ivy wannabes. You know - like Tufts alumni.

As an alumna, I have always seen GW on par with Georgetown. GW has a decidedly international and political science flair, but it is a very solid school...very well respected and very much in demand. It has an excellent law school; many of my friends and former colleagues graduated from the law school, and picked it over others in the area. GW's location can't be beat and the opportunities to network offered by this school second to none. GW has an adrenaline...well known in internation studies, political science, journalism, etc. An all around great school...in the heart of everything and well endowed and well managed.
