Hi,
I was accepted to George Washington University (DC), Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts). I was accepted into the engineering for all 3 schools. I got merit scholarships from all three schools, but money is not really an issue for my family. I am from the LA area and I have family in RI (which is close to WPI). I guess I have two questions:
GWU is not really close to any of my family members, but I am not sure if I really have to have family nearby. For those of you that have gone through college, did you find that having family of close helped or you didn’t really need them?
Also, I am on the fence for all three schools and I am curious as to which school people think is the most highly regarded when it comes to engineering? I am aware that WPI is pretty much solely engineering, but I am not sure if it is as highly regarded as the other schools. I want to go to a school that people will know.
Thanks in advance!
WPI is the third oldest college of engineering in the US. You might want to compare job placements by the specific major and see what corporations did the hiring. “Outcomes” are a good way of judging a college’s reputation among employers. WPI’s reports are specific and available to the public.
Check on results in your possible majors on the following website @ https://www.wpi.edu/student-experience/career-development/outcomes. For the latest report click on the 2017 Post Graduate Report, go to the index on page three and click on your selected major.
You will see the number of graduates that year in that field, what the average accepted salaries were and where they went to graduate school. To protect privacy salaries will not be given when the sample size is too small. Note that a small percentage of students go directly to graduate school when the salaries are very good (e.g., CS at $83,672 vs biochemistry at $42,500). Many engineering and CS students often go on to masters programs at a later date and often with help from their employer.
We welcome comparison. The “on the street” reputations of schools are very regional except for the largest universities and a very few really nationally known schools like MIT, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Caltech and big sports schools. As you will see by the listings, WPI is heavily recruited by national corporations.
What is your possible major?
Try the other school websites. Get the facts, not your neighbors opinions. In the east, few have heard of Harvey Mudd. You probably am aware that it is top notch!
Congratulations on you college acceptances!
Thank you. By the way I am going for mechanical engineering. I appreciate the information! If any one else has opinions I would appreciate it.
