GWU vs. PITT BME and premed

I have been accepted into both the George Washington University and the University of Pittsburgh for Biomedical engineering. I plan on going to med school after I graduate (I want to specialize in orthopedics). GW gave me a scholarship so that the cost of of attendance is about equal to that of PITT (out of state). Even though I want to go into med I want a quality engineering education. Both programs are ABET accredited.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

GW isn’t really known for its engineering, so I’d say if prices are equal go to Pitt.

Georgia Washington is overall better. Neither are known for their engineering programs. University of Pittsburgh is somewhat popular for its medical programs. So for Bioengineering you can’t go wrong with either.

We were very underwhelmed by GWU’s engineering facilities. And they are not ranked as highly as Pitt. We felt like engineering was an afterthought at GWU compared to their other majors such as IR etc.

Overall, they are academic peers. In engineering, Pitt is significantly better. Same goes for medical-related fields. I would choose Pitt.

Thanks for your advice. I heard that GW has been spending a significant amount of money on their engineering department in recent years trying to improve… do you think this will be effective?

Yes, GWU is trying to improve and is spending a lot of money including building a large new engineering/science building (for late 2014 or 2015). Their 10 year plan can be found here -

I had found some other document a few years ago where their stated goal was to be in the top 50 engineering schools, they are down in the 90’s when I last looked.

Thanks bean towngirl! I was looking for something like this. They are also planning on bringing in more top professors into the department.

They stole a few from UMD already.
